    Red Sox 7, Astros 10:
    Welcome Back…Alan Embree?!

    Posted by Christine E. at 5:40 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

Jon Lester put in another good day of work, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits (including a homer to Kaz Matsui) while walking none and striking out 7. He threw 75 pitches, 54 for strikes…Okajima, Ramon S and Daniel Bard all did well too, with only Okajima giving up a run. Then Jonathan Papelbon, trying to pitch through a migraine (take it from someone who suffers from migraines–NEVER a good idea) got rocked for 6 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out zero…UGH…

First, Nomar reaches out to retire in a Sox uniform and it happens…

And then Alan Embree’s agent reaches out to Theo in an e-mail, letting him know that Embree still had gas in the tank at 40. So Theo sent a scout, and voila, Alan Embree is signed to a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training.: “…I feel 100 percent. I’ve been able to do everything that everybody else would be able to do. Workload, I’m still the same guy. I can throw 65 games if you need me to, at whatever capacity they want me to. I’m here to kind of fit in…” In 882 career appearances, he is 39-45 with a 4.59 ERA…

So it should be even more interesting as the season draws near, how the last 1 or 2 bullpen slots play out….

Maybe now, just MAYBE, folks can stop talking about Tim Wakefield is going to the bullpen, especially after his outing over the weekend, throwing a 2-hitter in 5 innings of work against the Oreos. Throwing 65 pitches (39 for strikes), he walked 2 and struck out 3.

Daisuke finally made his 1st “real” start in 2010, a minor league intrasquad game, where he threw 32 pitches, 18 of strikes. Provided all goes well, look for him to pitch 3 innings after Wake on Thursday when the Sox will face the Marlins at City of Palms…And since the goal for all starters is to get to 15 pitches in a game before they are considered stretched out sufficiently, it looks like Daisuke will stay in Florida on the DL when the Sox break camp next week…

Apparently, there are still “thousands” of tickets available for the Home Opener next weekend at Fenway vs the Skanks–so my question is: are they all single tickets? Or are they the ones that were not available when I tried to buy some a couple of weeks ago when I was selected for the “second chance” opportunity to purchase tickets? Good news though–prices are down at the ticket resellers this year, up to 30% less than last year…so if you want Easter Night 8:00 tickets for the 1st game of the 2010 campaign against the Skanks, there are tickets to be had…

So Joe Mauer signed with the Twins…for 8 years, and $184 million AND includes a full no-trade clause… And why is this a surprise to anyone? Yeah, I know, the Twins are notoriously tight fisted–but with their new stadium and all, they would have to had been completely bonkers not to sign the hometown boy, who happens to be one of, if not the, best player in baseball right now…

Another Split Squad day today, with Boof Bonser getting the start against the Rays at City of Palms, which they lost 11-9. The other 1/2 went to Jupiter for the makeup game with the Cardinals, with Michael Bowden getting the start for the Sox, which they also lost 8-13, as everyone pitching pretty much sucked out loud–although the Sox DID light up “Bad Penny!” for 7 runs in 5 innings of work, which is rather fun…

Coming up: Tomorrow night the Sox take their losing record of 11-9 to Hammond Stadium to play the Twins, with Clay Buchholz getting the start. 1st pitch: 7:05pm, and the game will be televised on MLB.TV–unfortunately, I cannot watch MLB.TV on my Roku until Opening Day..which I did not know until I signed up and went to the Roku Page…CRAP…

    13 more days….Whooo Hoo!
