    February 3, 2010:
    More This and That…

Posted by Christine E. at 8:03 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

This has to be the WORST part of the year. Not only is it about 17 degrees out, there is buptkus as far as anything going on in the baseball world. Every morning and evening, I do the round of sports pages, to see if anything interesting is going on. And Guess what? Zero, zilch, nada, nuthin…

And while Joe Mauer signing a 52 year contract with the Twins in certainly great news if you are a Twins fan–it doesn’t really affect my life. And I am not going to whine that he will not be catching for the Sox next year, because I never really thought he would be–the Twins were the team to beat in that sweepstakes–he grew up there, and his VACATION home is actually IN Minnesota….So someone would have needed a mighty crowbar to pry him away from there–or the Twins being complete boneheads–and now it looks like neither will come to pass…

And just because: Johnny Damon STILL does not have a job–maybe he should rethink the whole $13 million a year for 4 years idea? YA THINK?

Am I the only one who shudders when people say that the Demonic Bullpen Tandem (Manny Delcarmen, and the incumbent Ramon Ramirez) are a lock for the 2010 bullpen? SHUDDER…

But the Sox are definitely going to make it interesting for the bullpen battle in Spring Training, signing reliever Joe Nelson to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. A career pitcher with 4.07 ERA, and a 7-2 record, he spent last year with Tampa Bay, making 42 appearances with a 4.02 ERA…And yes, he was briefly with the Sox in 2004, pitching 2 2/3 innings with the club…

And, apparently, he has this pitch called “The Vulcan” (a special moving changeup). I can just see the Skankee commentators going on and on and ON about that during a game…

There is a distinct possibility that Nomar has played his last game. Last year he was a bench player, hitting .281 with Oakland. Rumor has it, he is looking for some sort of TV gig–hey NESN? Can you make room? Nomar and Lou Merloni could have their own freaking SHOW…How cool would THAT be???

Others who might be done as well:

Wily Mo–yeah, the player everyone thought would eventually get with it and put up monster Number. He didn’t even play in the bigs last year, spending the entire 2009 campaign in the Met’s minor league system. And yes, he is only 27.

Batsh*t Julian: I think the Sox should sign him again, give him an invite to Spring Training. The entertainment value there is more than worth it…

Alan Embree: He was pretty much done when the Sox let him go…

Bartolo Colon/Eric Gagne: UGH, and YUK, and oh so far they have fallen…

Finally, I am seriously liking the fact that the Hall of Fame now makes the choice as to what hat a player will wear when inducted in the Hall, citing conflicts of interest. Especially in the case of Fat Boy Roger–anything that puts a cramp in his style is something I will vote for wholeheartedly…

Coming up: HOPEFULLY some interesting and relevant baseball news…Hopefully
