    January 5, 2010:
    Signing an Adrian…

Posted by Christine E. at 6:36 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

While it was not my 1st choice, as far as Adrian’s go, and especially since the Sox signing 3rd baseman Adrian Beltre means the definite end of Mike Lowell’s tenure in a Red Sox uniform–this was probably not the worst thing the Sox could do…

It’s not Adrian Gonzales, who would have been the BEST–good price, very young (28 in May) and a superstar in the making–But since Jed Hoyer made it pretty clear that the Padres are “not looking to move (Gonzales)”, and the Sox seem to want to focus on preventing runs from scoring, rather than scoring them in bunches, as they have in he past…

But I have to tell you, I am WAY conflicted–If Lowell’s trade to the Rangers for the Cather who can’t catch went through, I would probably be thrilled about this signing (especially since using Casey Kotchman as the everyday 1st baseman was less than desirable…)

But when that deal fell through, I hoped, for one crazy nutso moment, that the Sox would come to their senses and say “What are we doing?! Mike Lowell needs to stay!” Yeah, right…

And now the rumor around town is that Mike Lowell may join Jason Bay in New York, as the Sox may be looking to trade him for the Mets Luis Castillo, which makes no sense, as he is almost as old as Lowell is (he’ll be 35 in September)and plays 2nd base–hello? The Sox already HAVE a Hardware-Laden 2nd baseman who is about as untouchable on the Sox as any player can be…

The deal with 30 year old Beltre, whom won gold gloves in 07 and 08, is a 1-year $9 million contract, with a $5 million player option, or $1 million buyout for 2011. Of course, a physical is required before all is finalized….

Plagued by very worrisome shoulder problems in 2009 that limited him to 111 games, Beltre hit .268 with 8 homers with Seattle…

And just because: Hindered by hip and thumb woes that limited him to 119 games, Mike Lowell hit .290 with 17 homers with the Sox…

Uh huh…I’m just saying, is all….

But one fun note in all of this–Satan is Adrian Beltre’s agent–and I am sure Boras expected to get him another one of those 5-Year $64 million deals he got him in 2005–they year after he hit 48 home runs–which he hasn’t come close to doing since…HA HA….

So we will see if improving the defense and pitching is enough to get the Sox back in the game–’cause chances are, the “big bat” all of Red Sox Nation was hoping for this Christmas, probably will not happen…

Coming up: Hall of Fame Announcement tomorrow, 2:00pm EST…
