    December 18, 2009:
    Hardware Update…

Posted by Christine E. at 5:57 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Of course, we folks of Red Sox Nation are very much aware of the talented center fielder we have–and personally, I think Jacoby Ellsbury should have received a gold glove for his efforts this year–but he got something almost as good: He was selected Defensive Player of the Year in MLB.com’s annual This Year in Baseball Awards. Narrowly beating out Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies, Jacoby only made 2 errors in 772 chances in center field during the 2009 campaign for a fielding % of .997. Incidentally, these 2 errors were also the 1st two of his career. So not only is a superb base runner, but an exceptional fielder as well…

And the most ironic thing of all? Jacoby Ellsbury is considered to have “below-average defensive statistics” according to metrics such as plus-minus and UZR ratings. My question is: how exactly is he below average? What more could he possibly do to improve his stats????

Reiteration to Theo: MUST NOT TRADE JACOBY…

Also in Hardware News: For the 2nd year in a row (and the 1st time a left handed pitcher won consecutive years), Jon Lester has been chosen Red Sox’ Pitcher of the Year by the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He will be honored at their annual dinner Thursday, January 14th, at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in South Boston. Still looking for a superb Christmas present for that special Red Sox fan? Tickets to the BBWAA dinner are $150 each, and can be purchased by sending a check to the Boston Chapter-BBWAA, P.O. Box 7346, Nashua, N.H., 03060.

It is astounding to me that Jon Lester will only be 26 when the season starts…and I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet.

Because the Sox will be playing the Skanks on ESPN2 on Sunday the 4th, the other 2 games of the 3 game opening series at Fenway have been moved as well. Instead of the 2 games being on April 7th, and 8th, they will be moved ahead a day, to April 6 & 7. Both game times are 7:10pm. So, in the 1st week of 2010, the Sox will have 2 days off: Monday, the 5th, and Thursday the 8th….

Looks like Skeezy Bastard is without a job: Apparently, Satan’s bluff of “don’t come a calling unless you have $39 million to spend” backfired on them: The Skanks have decided to go in a different direction with the DH, signing Nick Johnson (so glad! That means he won’t be coming to the Sox…) to a 1-year $5.5 million contract…HA HA….

Coming up: The last weekend before Christmas, so remember your favorite Red Sox fan with some swag…
