Red Sox 12, White Sox 8:
One strange duck of a game…

How does one score 6 runs with only 2 hits? If your Jose Contreras and you cannot pick up the ball, resulting in the error–the Sox do–with 6 unearned runs…Here is his line: 2.2 innings, throwing 84 pitches, 46 for strikes, while giving up 7 runs (ONE earned) on 4 hits (including Mike Lowell’s 3-run shot), while walking 3, striking out 1, throwing TWO wild pitches, and hitting a batsmen (Youk, naturally…) bring his record to a nifty 5-12…I bet that Theo thanks the gods every day that the Skanks poached Contreras out from under him–he has been a disaster from the get go…

That Clay Person really wasn’t all that much better, going 4 2/3, throwing 92 pitches, 61 for strikes, giving up 7 runs on 6 hits (including 2 homers) while walking and striking out 3…

Daisuke, making his 1st rehab start with the Gulf Coast League in FL on Monday, pitched great–3 scoreless innings of 1 hit ball, throwing 37 pitches, walking none and striking out 4…While its still novice league, that is a damn sight better than he had been pitching before this rehab stint. If all goes well, the next step is Portland, then Pawtucket next Thursday…then if things go according to plan, we could see him back at The Show the following Tuesday the 8th…

And I am so excited that Tim Wakefield will be making his 1st start back tomorrow night–I hope he is completely brilliant, although I expect some rust–and I hope his calf holds out….

And I think this weekend’s Sox/Skanks series can best be summed up in Haiku verse:

    Friday Night Way Bad,

    Saturday Night, Tons of Fun,

    Sunday, Not So Much…

And hey, at least they weren’t swept–although I think we can all safely say, that, unless there is an epic collapse by the Skanks (unlikely as it is) that the Sox are playing for the Wild Card, which, with wonky win last night, and Texas being off, puts the Sox 1.5 games ahead in that race…and right now, both the Sox and the Rangers are listed as having 2 to 1 odds of making the Postseason…

And another positive is that they FINALLY pulled Bad Penny! out of the starting 5–Holy Buckets! Took ‘em long enough…and How ’bout Tazawa on Saturday? Regular Skankee killer there…

So both Jed Lowrie and Paul Byrd made rehab appearances in last night’s Pawtucket game. No timetable for their return yet, nor is there one for George Kottaras. I suspect we will see all of them after September 1, when the rosters expand…

And in case you were wondering, the Sox are 7 behind the Skanks in the AL East…UGH…

So Billy Wagner doesn’t want the Sox to activate his option for 2010 (he wants to close, and the Sox already have a closer), nor does he want the Sox to offer him arbitration (so he would be more attractive to other teams) but he is a Type A player-which means the Sox wouldn’t get the compensatory draft picks–he would strictly be a rental for the next 2 months…Take a pass Theo–this guy is trouble…The deal must be done by 1:00pm today…

Coming up: Jon Lester gets the nod in Game 2 of this 4 game ChiSox series, opposed by Freddie Garcia, who holds a 3-1 record against the Sox at Fenway–freaking wonderful…1st pitch 7:10pm

And, looking at the probable pitching for this weekend, it looks like That Clay Person will be getting the start Saturday night against Toronto–the night that I am there…So, folks, if we could pray for a rainout 1 day this week, that would bump Josh Beckett to Saturday, which is definitely a more desirable outcome…’cause I would MUCH rather watch Beckett pitch, than That Clay Person…
