    Red Sox 6, Oakland 8:
NOW can the Sox get Doc Halladay?

Posted by Christine E. at 1:05 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Holy Buckets! In what was one of (if not THE) worst starts by Bad Penny! with the Red Sox, there was one…bright…shining…thing: DH Mike Lowell had a 5-RBI night (2 for 3 with a walk, and a 3-run homer), which means he was responsible 83.33% of the scoring the Sox did last night…So if the rest of the starting 9 did HALF as well, we’d be looking at this game a whole heck of a lot different…

Penny’s line: 5+ innings, throwing 100 pitches, 58 for strikes, giving up 7 runs including FIVE in the 1st inning–and one of the remaining two inherited by Masterson and allowed to score) on 7 hits (including TWO homers) while walking FOUR and striking out 3..Bring his record to 7-5, with a 5.07 ERA

Fortunately, the bull pen kept the Sox within reach, even if they had to pitch 4 innings after having an 11 inning outing the night before, only giving up 1 run on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4, which is decidedly better than the night before–but of course it was–MDC or Papelbon were not available…

At least Brett Anderson did not shut the Sox down like he did in his last outing–but back then, Mike Lowell was on the DL…coincidence? Or something more?

So, now the Sox are 3.5 games behind the Skanks, who don’t seem to lose anymore–or at least not enough to impact things–although if the Sox continue to lose, they are making their job easy for them…

Apparently Tito had a heart to heart with Daisuke yesterday (without an interpreter no less), to clear the air about his crappy comments the day before. From Tito: “I actually spent a pretty good deal of time with him on the phone this morning…I let him talk a little bit, which he actually did, in English, which I think, was making the effort, which I thought was pretty cool…”He understood how we felt. He was trying to make some points about probably being a little bit regretful. Again, I probably need to not speak for him. That’s not fair. And the points I made to him were, ‘Yeah, this is how we felt. Now, where do we go from here?” THIS is the reason Tito is such a great manager, and garners such respect from his players…

Despite the fact that David Ortiz was back at the ballpark yesterday (his daughter, Alexandra’s medical emergency turned out to be a false alarm, and she is OK) Big Papi was not in the lineup (Anderson is a left hander) so Mike Lowell became the DH (Which they should do more often, if a 5 RBI game is any indication) with Youk playing 3rd and Adam LaRoche getting his 4th start in the last week…

So, the Phillies could not get the deal done with Toronto for Roy Halladay, so they took their ball and ran right over to Cleveland, where they made a deal for the current Cy Young winner, Cliff Lee, in exchange fro some prospects…Isn’t he pretty ineffective against the Sox? Which would be WAY cool if the Sox met the Phils in the World Series, although the way it’s going, actually GETTING to the Series seems a bit remote…

So, with a little more than a day before the 4:00pm deadline tomorrow, does the Phillies acquisition of Lee improve the chances for Doc Halladay in a Red Sox uniform? Gordo (Gordon Edes, whom I miss terribly, and is now at Yahoo! Sports (LINK) reported a rumor that “the Sox have offered starting pitcher Clay Buchholz, a choice of first baseman Lars Anderson, pitcher Justin Masterson, or pitcher Michael Bowden” I think Theo needs to make this deal…AND find a bat…

Blast from the Past: And who said Mike Timlin was done? Apparently, 43 year old Timlin has signed a minor league deal with Colorado this week, and will more than likely be returning to the bigs for his 19th season…Wow…

Coming up: A freaking DAY game–not that the Sox have been playing in any fashion I actually want to sit down and watch…Jon Lester gets the start, opposed by yet ANOTHER lefthander (But look for Big Papi to be in the mix for this game) Gio Gonzales. 1st pitch is 1:35pm…
