    Red Sox 6, Royals 8
    Losing to Horribly Crappy Teams…

Posted by Christine E. at 4:09 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

One of the only good things about last night’s game was David Ortiz, and his 2-run shot in the 1st inning, which was his 300th career home run in major league baseball… He is the 19th player in history to reach the mark, and the 1st player in a Sox uniform to do it since, you guessed it, Manny Ramirez did it back in August 2002…Congratulations Big Papi!

And here is the rest of it: Bad Penny! wasn’t horrible–he just didn’t pitch long enough. He went 5 innings, throwing 97 pitches, 68 for strikes, while giving up 3 runs on 6 hits while walking and striking out 1…Good enough for the win on most days…

But then Manny Delcarmen comes in–what is GOING ON with him? Another piss poor performance for him, his 2nd in a row, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits in his 2/3 inning of work–although, to be fair, one of those runs was one inherited by the uncharacteristically bad Justin Masterson, who allowed it to score, and then tacked on 2 runs of his own on 2 hits (one a home run) Not to be left out of the fun, Ramon Ramirez, gave up another run on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4 in 1 2/3 innings of work.

The only bright spot in the pen? Daniel Bard, throwing 17 pitches 14 for strikes (!!) pitches a perfect inning and a third, while striking out 3…And he has been quietly accumulating a very impressive resume: In his last 4 appearances, (5 1/3 innings of work) he has not allowed a run, and of those 16 outs, guess how many were strikeouts? TEN…Maybe I was a bit too hasty about sending him back to Pawtucket…

So now the Sox and the Skanks share the top spot in the AL East–and Tampa Bay, at 4.5 games behind, are creeping back in…

It all boils down to this: Last…ten…games…

    Sox: 5-5

    Skanks: 8-2

THAT is how they gained 3 games on us in the last 10…The Sox are cruising at .500, and the Skanks are playing EIGHT HUNDRED baseball…

I know the Sox have injuries, but they are at freaking FENWAY PARK for heaven’s sake! They hold the best home record in the bigs! They should have been winning ALOT more of these games–instead, they have an abysmal 3-4 record in the last 7 games at home…3-4! That is a .429 winning percentage…

I think this 4 days off for the All -Star Break (as painful as it will be for the rest of us—although the way they have been playing—maybe not so much….) will be the perfect time out for the Sox to get their crap together and start playing the way we all know they can…

Looking good on the Mike Lowell front, as he resumes all of his baseball activities, and daily workouts, in preparation to be activated next week, when the Sox return from Spring All-Star Break…from Mike: “Today (Thursday) was great, so I’m really happy. The [medical staff] told me they’d be shocked if I didn’t feel like everything was in sync by the end of the week. Today’s Thursday, so that’s a pretty good sign. They assured me it was going to get better each day, and it has…” They Sox will reevaluate him on Sunday, to determine the path forward….

And some more good news on the Jed Lowrie front, Tito actually has went on record and said that the potential return date for Jed is NEXT SATURDAY–Whooo Hooo!!!

Coming up: Jon Lester (wearing a yellow glove as part of Lance Armstrong’s “Live Strong” campaign), will take the mound in his final start before the break. The last time he faced the Royals? He no-hit them (I’m just saying…) He is opposed by Brian Bannister for KC. 1st pitch 7:10pm…

But before I get ready for tonight’s game, I’ll take a short break, have a coffee and browse through some internet poker news for updates on the World Series of Poker (WSOP). Go Sox!
