    June 23, 2009:
    Countdown to Smoltz…

Posted by Christine E. at 5:35 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Yes, in 2 days, John Smoltz will don a Red Sox uniform and pitch for a major league team other than the Atlanta Braves for the 1st time in his career–and I cannot wait…I have always be a huge fan of Smoltz, despite the fact he pitched from the ucky Atlanta Braves…Unfortunately, it will be a TiVo’ ed game for me, as I have to be somewhere else, which royally sucks, but at least I can watch it at some point…

So, now that Daisuke is on the DL, can someone, please, seriously look into signing Tom Glavine? Please? I know Clay Buchholz is anxiously (and quite verbally) awaiting a call up from Pawtucket, but this is TOM GLAVINE we are talking about…

It appears that Joe Girardi is taking some heat about his recent managerial decisions, most notably the fact that since A-Fraud returned from his hip surgery, 38 games ago, he has had zero, count ‘em ZERO days off, which prompted his rest over the weekend. Now, to be fair, Terry Francona hasn’t given a bunch of days off to Mike Lowell, who had his surgery in the off-season, but he has given him some, and I think we can all agree that Mike Lowell is made of MUCH sterner stuff than A-Fraud…And its pretty much a given than if the Skanks don’t win the World Series this year, that Joe Girardi will be out of a job. And, given his reputation of overworking his players (Dontrelle Willis STILL is not right after a year with Girardi…) it might be his last…It will be interesting to see how it all plays out–these are the times you wish King George wasn’t out of the loop–his reactions have always been cause for much amusement…

Donald Fehr, aka, minion of Satan, is finally retiring as the head of the Players Association–good riddance…

The talk around town is that Nick Green will be the odd man out when Jed Lowrie comes back, because the Sox stupidly paid FAR TOO MUCH for Sir Julio the Useless, and they cannot move him, not even for a bag o’ baseballs…I know that’s baseball, but if that happens, that will suck–ROYALLY. The kid has done well, and deserves better…

It will be interesting to see how the lineups play out for the next 6 interleague games (3 against the Nats/2 against the Braves) where the DH is not in play. Will Big Papi play? His resurgence as an offensive force (In the last 14 games he has hit .26 with 9 RBI’s and 5 home runs) will certainly help his cause…

And if spending time in a Legend Suite at Yankee Stadium for a Red Sox/Yankee game is your idea of fun, Rosie O’Donnell and Celebrities for Charity are raffling it off. It includes hotel, a $250 travel vouchers, 2 Legend Suite tickets to the August 8, 2009 game, and all of the taxes paid for…Raffle tickets are just $2 a piece and can be purchased here. All proceeds from this raffle benefit Rosie’s Broadway Kids charity in their efforts to fund art programs for New York City public school children…

Coming up: Bad Penny! starts the 1st game of the final 6 games of interleague play for the Sox in 2009: The Washington Nationals. He is opposed by John Lannan. 1st pitch is 7:05pm
