Red Sox 8, Tampa Bay 2:
    Even a Blind Squirrel…

    …will eventually find a nut…

Which is why I am not going to get the least bit excited about Julio Lugo being the hero of this game, going 3 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBI’s. He also did not make any errors, which is a miracle in and of itself…If he can continue to have games like this–maybe 60 or 80 of them–THEN maybe I will change my mind–but I doubt it…

What I will get excited about is the fact that there appears to be a long-term deal on the table for Jon Lester, rumored to be 5-year $30 million, which also has a $14 million team option for 2014…Of Course, Sox Management are saying nothing, as is there policy. But here is what Jon has to say: “I think it’s in the process of hopefully at some point getting done. I couldn’t tell you when or what day. Nothing that I know of has been finalized. I’m sure when it does become final, if it does, we’ll announce it.” Lester’s numbers for the 2008 campaign were 16-6 with a 3.21 REA, including a no-hitter on May 19th, against KC….

And how bout this for coolness: When the contract expires–he’ll be 30…30!!! It’s hard to remember that he is only 25 years old now…

After yesterday’s win the Sox better their record to 4-6. I would just be happy with a winning grapefruit season–and another year with the Mayor’s cup…

After shutting it down for a week, Brad Penny threw off the mound on Sunday, throwing a productive and pain free 35-pitch bullpen session. Still no timetable when he will see game action. What worries me is that if he is not ready to go at the beginning of the season, they may give Clay Buchholz his place in the rotation, until someone else is ready. I think Justin Masterson, who threw 3 scoreless innings of 1 hit ball in his start against Tampa Bay yesterday, would be a MUCH better idea….

I KNEW this was coming–crap, he did not ever last a week! Alex Rodriguez is having surgery on his hip today. Apparently, its some “different” kind of “hybrid” procedure, which will supposedly cut his recovery time from 4 months to 6 to 9 weeks…From the specialist doing the procedure, Dr Marc Philippon: “Because of all the tests, findings, analysis and function of Alex, I feel it’s in his best interest to have his labrum repaired, remove part of his impingement at the same time and therefore stabilize his labrum….and allow him to have more freedom of movement in his hip.” Hey, any time away from the Skanks is a detriment to them…and he will not be 100%, even when he comes back–best they can hope for: 85-90%–and there is always the potential for re-injury, especially before the completion of the procedure, which will happen during next years off-season…

Coming up: The Sox head to Bradenton to play Pittsburgh this afternoon. Jon Lester gets the start, with Manny Delcarmen, Takashi Saito, and Hideki Okajima also getting their work in…1st pitch 1:05pm….
