    February 16, 2009:
Reporting Day for the rest of the Sox…

Posted by Christine E. at 6:19 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Although a good many of the Boston Red Sox reported over the weekend, today is the official reporting day–they day they need to check in and be in Fort Meyers. As with pitchers and catchers, physicals will happen tomorrow, and then the 1st full squad workout will take place on Wednesday–and then…a week after that…BASEBALL will begin! I know, I know, it’s only Spring Training ball, where everyone plays 3 innings, and by the end people we have never heard of are playing–but its still organized games…

OK, who had the 1st Day of Spring training in the “When will JD Drew be injured” pool? Because you won–cause GUESS WHAT? All those lovely back issues that plagues him at the end of last season? THEY’RE BAAAAAAACK (No pun intended) While he says he could play today if necessary, he still has the problems–oh, and lets not forget that his left wrist is bothering, which causes him trouble closing his glove (!) And the worst part? There is not really anything that can be done–it’s not bad enough for surgery: “From everybody’s standpoint, it doesn’t look like its major enough to do anything to it…Just try to keep it calmed down. Down the road, and I’m talking years down the road, if it keeps flaring up, maybe they’ll do some kind of thing, but I haven’t even looked into that option. I don’t think anybody really has.” Freaking marvelous…I like JD Drew, really I do–but paying what the Sox paid for him and the fact that he is MADE OF GLASS…that part I am not thrilled about…

And can we cease and desist with all the witty headlines and titles of stories that deal with Dustin Pedroia’s height? OK, we all know is like 5′ 7″–ish–and we all know that he has a funky swing that people said would never get him, anywhere, and we know he works his tail off, and has had, after an abysmal start his rookie year, come back to win most of the hardware its possible to win as a 2nd baseman. I think we are a little beyond the whole height thing–don’t you? He is a GREAT baseball player–end of story…I am just interested to see HOW he will improve this year–and what is his next trick…

So, Julio the Useless thinks the shortstop position is his to lose huh? When asked who would be the starter for the 2009 campaign he stated: “You’re looking at him.” ARGH!!! I reallyREALLY cannot stand him! And NO amount of muscle/strength/etc is going to help someone who SUCKS defensively…

Of course, my favorite (and I don’t think I am alone here) is Jed Lowrie, and he is being pretty diplomatic about it: “I think I just need to be me and just go out there and continue to be the player I know I’m capable of being,” he said. “It’s hard for me to say I’m not worried about the competition, because obviously, I want the starting job. But at the same time, all I can do is control what I do and I’ll let the guys who get paid to make the decisions, make the decisions.”

And GUESS what I got for Valentines Day from MY Valentine? Yep–the Joe Torre Book. I started it yesterday, and they are still in 1998–and they were winning, so it’s still pretty boring–I want to get into the conflict years, and see what he has to say…But so far, its a pretty good read–for a book about the Skankees…
