    February 5, 2009:
    One…more…week…

Posted by Christine E. at 6:11 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

That’s right, folks, less than 7 days until the Pitchers and Catchers of the Boston Red Sox report to Spring Training in Fort Myers, FL. The group will have their 1st workout on Valentine’s Day…

So the rumor around town is that Julio Lugo and Jed Lowrie have been working hard this off-season in preparation to do battle for the starting shortstop position–freaking spare me. Julio Lugo is USELESS–and I dont care how hard he has worked, or how much muscle he has put in, he is still a dreadful defender–and unless he comes in and starts hitting .320 (not likely, since he is a career .271 hitter). the errors outweigh any benefit he could possibly make to this team…And please don’t say that he is a base stealer–you gotta get on base to steal–so until they make stealing 1st base an acceptable thing–the only thing he would be good for is a pinch runner…

Speaking of shortstops: My friend Paul, who lives in Boston, had the pleasure of meeting Nomar this weekend at a sport center he coaches at. He actually had the chance to speak with him for a few minutes alone, and said that he never met a nicer guy–and that when the kids all saw him, that we smiled for pictures, and was very kind to the kids as well…Apparently, he was in town visiting friends…Its nice to know that some players really are as nice as you hoped they would be…

Nomar’s available–and probably a 1-year $2-3 million contract with incentives for more would sign him–Could the Sox possibly make a crazy move and resign–NOMAR? Yeah, it’s crazy–but is it crazy enough to work?

So, Mark Kotsay has back surgery last week, to remove a displaced disc fragment, and will be out at least until May. The Sox just signed him 2 weeks ago–and he has a physical–you mean they knew about this (and the fact that his back woes and previous surgeries hampered him in 06 and 07?) and signed him anyway?

Guess that explains why the Sox sign Brad Wilkerson to a minor-league contract, with an invitation to Spring Training…He does he same thing Mark does–play 1st base and the outfield…

So the Dodgers made a “final” offer to Manny: a 1-year $25 million contract–and he turned it down so fast they got whiplash…Their previous offering was a 2-year $45 million contract, which Satan pretty much scoffed at. Apparently, he is still delusional enough to think there is a 4-year deal in the neighborhood of $100 million just waiting for him out there–with a week to Spring Training…

But if he cannot find a job, he still has THIS to fall back on: From our friends at eTrue Sports: Manny Ramirez To Be Named New HHS Secretary; Will Focus On Fatigue, Personality Disorders–and Recommends Poaching Salmonella. For the rest of story go here:

Coming up: The cause that is near and dear to my heart, V-Day Wilkes Barre, 2009, is this weekend. V-Day Wilkes Barre is in its 5th year of joining with V-Day worldwide to raise awareness and funds to stop violence against women and girls. We have 2 performances this year, “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and A Prayer” on Friday Night, and “The Vagina Monologues” on Saturday night, with proceeds benefiting The Victims Resource Center, a local organization working to stop violence in our community.
