    January 28, 2009:
    Tick Tock, Tick Tock, Tick…

So everyone thought Jason Varitek’s deadline was Saturday, but actually he was given 1 week to decide after receiving the proposal, which was last Friday. The deal is: A base of $5 million, with a 2010 Club Option of $5 million, or, ‘Tek can activate his player option worth $3 million, or if neither option was exercised, he would then become a free agent.

I reallyREALLY wish they would just get this done already–I am sick of talking about it–I am sick of rehash after rehash of how he should take the deal (I personally am in that camp) or not take the deal…

Bottom line–I really hope he takes the deal-it’s the best he is gonna get, and the thought of Josh Bard, or Pawtucket catchers Dusty Brown and George Kottaras actually being the everyday guy–makes me more than kinda queasy….

But in any event, its nice to see Scott Boras once again royally screw up–Lets hope ‘Tek is smart enough to fire this ass hat, whether he stays with Boston or not.

And for those of you who are of the belief that was an orchestrated attempt to screw him by the Sox. I think your logic needs some…logic. The Sox could have totally humiliated him by offering him a $1 or 2 million contract, and that STILL would have been better than what he has now, which is bupkus. But they chose to be fair, while still not being nutso…And as far as the whole salary arbitration thing. It was HIS choice to refuse to make at least what he was making last year, with the potential for more…

Until a decision is made, or something wildly earth shattering happens, I am done talking about this…

Sean Casey, recent retiree, had this to say in his official retirement announcement: “Boston was probably one of my favorite years of my career, just being a part of the Boston Red Sox was unbelievable. This decision really had more to do with seeing my kids. It just felt like it was becoming time to be home more. The tough part about it is that baseball has been so good to me, and it’s been everything I thought it would be and more. It’s been the ultimate dream for me.”

The newest member of the MLB network, where he will work as an analyst, was a .302 lifetime hitter, and an All-Star 3 times. And one of his 1st informal analyses was on…Jason Varitek: “I’d be shocked if Tek doesn’t come back to Boston. The fans love him there. The guys in that clubhouse love Tek. I can’t imagine Jason Varitek putting on a uniform besides the Boston Red Sox. I saw him a few weeks ago. I know he wants to come back to the Red Sox. So I hope they get that done. I think it would be good for both sides, no doubt about it, especially that pitching staff.”

OK, now I really mean it–no more Jason Varitek until the decision is made…

NOW the Manny Ramirez Era is officially over: Coaching Assistant (and personal confidant and assistant to Manny) Ino Guerrero has been replaced. Former major leaguer Alex Ochoa, who played in Pawtucket for a time in 2007, as well as in the bigs with 6 teams, including the Angels, Twins, and the Mets, has been named to the job. He will be given stuff to do during games by and will also be responsible for some advance scouting and pregame preparation…

Coming up: 2 Weeks Tomorrow–Pitchers and Catchers! Whoo Hoo!

More Hardball wants to know who has the hottest fans in baseball. We’ll be running a set of posts over the following weeks featuring images of each teams’ hotties, with a voting poll to crown a champion. We’re starting with the AL East and we’ll continue through the rest of the American League, then on to the National League. Sticking true to Major League Baseball’s roots, there will be an eight team playoff system where the winners of each division square off with addition of a wild card team to determine who wins the pennant and represents each league in the World Series of Hotness.
