    January 23, 2009:
    Will They, Or Won’t They?

Posted by Christine E. at 2:03 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

    Apparently, they already have…

Rumor around town is there a 1 year deal on the table, how much remains to be seen…and, despite the fact that there is nothing else out there, ‘Tek is holding out hope for a 2-year contract. BIG departure from the 4 years, $52 million Boras was floating a couple of month ago…

I see that Charles P. Pierce of the Globe is smoking a little bit of a ganja weed, with his blog post on OT  He is starting that nonsense about bringing Manny Ramirez back. That since his exit was all orchestrated by management, that it somehow “balances” the abysmal behavior of Manny. Uh Huh….Uh, NO.

Folks, I don’t know how Manny could make it any plainer–HE DOES NOT WANT TO PLAY FOR BOSTON. And I truly believe he did everything in his power to force the hand of Sox Management–whether or not that was at Scot Boras’ bidding, well, we’ll never know for sure.

But let’s just hope that whatever Charles P is smoking, he is not sharing….

Looking more and more like Curt Schilling has decided to retire–and, as retired folks often do, he got a part time job! Curt has signed a contract with WEEI, Flagship radio station of the Red Sox, AM 850. He will be making an in-studio appearance one Thursday a month, as part of the 4 hour daily show, The Big Show  . On the Thursdays he is not in-studio, he will call in for a 20-30 minute segment either on The Big Show, or The Dennis & Callahan Morning Show . He will also make regular postings to WEEI’s website …

And on his 1st show, he did a bit of stumping for his friend and favorite catcher, Jason Varitek: “…might be overstating how many guys would have good or bad seasons based on Jason being back there, but I’m very comfortable with saying that there is very little chance that every guy on that staff won’t be better if he’s back this year. He’s the kind of guy that makes you as good as you can be each start…Jason knows us as good, if not better, than some of us know ourselves.”

Jonathan Papelbon, when he wasn’t talking about himself and how great he is, actually had the time to extolling he virtues of his catcher, Jason Varitek: “There’s certain players in Major League Baseball … that you take a gamble on, whether it’s age or whether it’s money. Varitek is, no question about it, in that category. “Whether it’s a money issue or whether it’s an age issue, there’s no question in my mind whatsoever. You make that gamble with a person like that. It’s that simple to me.”

I never understood the whole concept of throwing your family under the bus for money–even if it’s a whole bunch of money. But apparently, the concept works for Jay McGwire, brother to Mark. He’s got a book proposal out there–called: “The McGwire Family Secret: The Truth about Steroids, a Slugger and Ultimate Redemption,” And the best thing about this? He says he had an altruistic motive! From Jay: “…My bringing the truth to surface about Mark is out of love. I want Mark to live in truth to see the light, to come to repentance so he can live in freedom – which is the only way to live.”

Religious nut much? And no offense to anyone’s religion–just dont like when people shove their beliefs down other’s throats…

Condolences are in Order: Bill Werber, the oldest living ex-major leaguer and a former teammate of Babe Ruth, died at age 100 this week.

2 Weeks to Truck Day! You KNOW that Spring Training is just around the corner, when the Sox pack up the 18 wheeler with everything the Sox and their players could want/need/gotta have, and make the 3 day trek to Fort Myers, FL.

THEN 6 days after the truck leave, on February 12th (less than 3 weeks!), its Pitchers and Catchers. And on Valentines Day, they have their 1st workout…

Coming up: Tomorrow, at 10am, the remainder of the Red Sox home game tickets (except for Opening Day, All the Skankee Games, the Green Monster seats and the Right Field Roof Deck Tables) up for sale. With no change in price from last year, folks can purchase tickets by going online, or calling: 1-877-REDSOX9. The TTY line (for the hearing impaired) is (617) 226-6644.
