    January 16, 2009:
Hard to think about Baseball when its THREE degrees outside…

Posted by Christine E. at 12:45 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Holy Buckets! This weather SUCKS! And with the wind chill taking NE Pennsylvania to 10-20 below zero–it’s really difficult to imagine warm weather and green grass and baseball…

Just a couple of weeks ago, it did not appear that Kevin Youkilis and the Sox would be doing anything long term, rather, continuing with the one-year deal thing. But last night, on the final day to file for arbitration, the Sox and Youk reached a 4-year, $41 million agreement, which also includes an option for 2013. With this agreement, Youk will miss the 1st 2 year of free agency, and his third if the 2013 option is exercised. The final step for the finalization is his physical today…

Speaking of arbitration Jonathan “It’s my duty to set the monetary standard for closers” Papelbon, and Javier Lopez both filed yesterday, joining 109 other players who also filed on the final day to do so…But since Theo has never went to arbitration since he has been GM, I don’t expect that either one of these pitchers will get there as well, and will sign (probably) 1 year contracts before they get to a hearing…

So Long, Farewell: Looks like Alex Cora will not be holding up the bench for the Sox this year, having agreed to a 1 year, $2 million deal with the Mets. He was with the Sox for more than 3 years—great glove, mediocre at best bat…I am sorry to see him go, but glad he got a decent deal somewhere else…

Also ending his time with the Sox is David Aardsma, as he as designated for assignment so that newly re-signed Mark Kotsay (1 Year, $1.5 million, plus incentives) has a place on the 40 man roster…Sorry to see him go? Not so much…

Big Papi is unsure whether he will play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. One word: Good. The Sox need him 100% for 2009–not for the stinking WBC.

Looks like Bartolo Colon found a place that will accept his crappy attitude, signing with the White Sox for a 1 year, $1 million contract. He was suspended without pay from the Sox last year, because he blew them off and went home to the Dominican Republic, because he was mad they wanted him to work out of the bullpen for the postseason–Jerk…

So much for some interesting drama with Michael Young and the Rangers. After going public with his bitching and complaining and refusal to play 3rd base, he has now agreed to play 3rd base: “My focus is playing for the Rangers, playing for a winning club and playing the best third base that I can. Yes, I was adamant about staying at shortstop. But at the end of the day, after looking at everything, the chances of being traded were slim and the team wasn’t really pursuing a trade…” So basically, he made a complete idiot of himself—for no reason. Not the 1st time a player has done that–and certainly won’t be the last–just ask Gary Sheffield….

Coming up: Mark your calendars: One week tomorrow, the annual “sit in front of my computer for 10+ hours, or until I get tickets” event begins. Yep, next Saturday, January 24, the remaining tickets for Red Sox games at Fenway go on sale, beginning at 10:00am. You can get them online at Fenway, or by phone: 1-877-REDSOX9. All tickets are available, except for Opening Day, All Games against the Skanks, The Green Monster, and The Right Field Roof Deck; all of them will be sold by random drawings at a later date…And don’t forget! Tickets prices will remain the same this year!

This year, I am seriously debating forgoing Fenway (blasphemy, I know) and instead, going to the Hall of Fame induction weekend, and seeing Jim Ed get inducted into the Hall of Fame…
