    December 11, 2008:
So, how much is too much???

As I mentioned yesterday, CC Sabathia got 161 million reasons to ignore his desire to go to the left coast–and will be the property of the Skanks for the next 7 years…This contract is the biggest ever given to a pitcher, averaging $23 million a year…Sabathia is 28 years old, which will make him about 35 when the contract is finished…

I know this was probably the only way the Skanks could have extricated him from the left coast–and it’s generally the only way to get good pitching is to offer them ridiculously long contracts for crazy money…

But has one of these contracts been a good idea? EVER? Mike Hampton (Not) Barry Zito (um, NO) Johan Santana (looking good, but he only just finished his 1st year) So maybe CC Sabathia will be one of the exceptions, rather than the rule, but I really cannot see how a player, who is 6’7, and nearly 300 lbs, and threw almost 250 innings last year, is built to stand up to a 7 year contract… Um, just…not…seeing…it…

And it interesting to note that the Skanks gave Sabathia an opt out clause, which means if he is doing well, he can bail on them, or hold them ransom for more money–sort of like how A-Fraud did….HAHAHA Boy, are they STUPID…

And if overpaying for 1 pitcher (even if he is a VERY good one) will not guarantee anything, cause if it did, the Sox would have won a world series much sooner than 2004–like when Pedro was electric back in 99…

So, according to SATAN, the sox have made an offer to Jason Varitek. No details are available yet, and the only thing the evil one would say is: And he became remarkably reticent when asked if there were any other offers for ‘Tek…hmmm…..

The Sox have also made an offer in the Mark Teixeira (it going to take me until May to spell that without looking). Again, no firm numbers have been said, but it looks like Teixeira will be looking at Manny Ramirez + numbers (8 years, 200 million…) Apparently, the Angels, the Oreos, and Nationals (reported to be 8 years, 180 million) have made offers as well…Teixeira, who is only 28, played for the Braves and the Angels last year, hitting .308 with 33 homers and 121 RBI’s

And of course, citing the ever popular club policy of “We do not comment on negotiations” Theo had little more to offer–on either front…Although on the subject of opt out clauses, he did say this: “We’d be strongly opposed to it. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where we’d do it, [especially] with a player in his prime years.” Of course, that does not mean that the Sox will not benefit from an “opt-outer”. Remember, JD Drew opted out of his contract with the Dodgers to play for the Sox, who paid him $7 million for 5 years–and no opt out clause…

Guess the 6th time is not the charm. For the 1st time since 2003, David Ortiz has not won the Edgar Martinez Designated Hitter Award, which is awarded each year to the best DH. This year’s recipient is Aubrey Huff from the Oreos. It’s his 1st award…

Coming up: The Winter Meetings draw to a close today, with the Rule 5 draft, which it looks like the Sox will not be participating this year. And then we all wait to see what develops…
