    November 26, 2008:
Twas the Day before Turkey Day…

…And very little going on in Red Sox Nation…

Curt Schilling, still deciding to pitch or retire, will be joining the USO/Armed Forces Entertainment Group and tour the Persian Gulf to meet and greet US Troops. From Curt: “I know it’s very small in the grand scheme of things for the troops deployed in an active war zone, but this is absolutely a highlight of my life and something I’m as proud to be a part of as anything I’ve ever done. To be able to say thank you at a time of year that I can’t fathom being apart from my family is a true honor. I am proud to accept the invitation.”

I guess 3 months is better than 5–even if it wont matter to most of us. The Sox released their 2009 Spring Training Schedule yesterday and the 1st exhibition game will be held 3 months (less 1 day) from now, On February 25th, when the Sox have a doubleheader, taking on Boston College at 1:05pm at City of Palms Park, and then moving over to Hammond Stadium, to play the 1st game towards the Mayors Cup, against Fort Myers neighbor, the Twins….Tickets for all Spring training games (same prices for the last 3 years!) will go on sale on December 6th, at 10:00am….and they make great Christmas gifts–as long as you pony up for transportation as well…

And, in case you were wondering, the 1st Sox/Skankee match up is March 13th at 7:05pm at City of Palms…

Turning Japanese Again? I really think so: We all know that the Sox have offered Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa a reported $6 million, 3 year contract recently. Now, rumor has it, that he will be accepting the Sox contract offer, over offers from the Rangers, Mariners, et al, sometime next week. Despite that fact that the Sox may well have offered less money that some of hte other teams, the tipping point seemed to be the fact that the Sox have Daisuke, who is a rock star over in the Japan….

I’m just glad the sox did not have to pay some CRAZY amount of money for him–and that Satan is nowhere to be found in the deal….Tazawa will probably spend most of his time in the minors, at least for a while, as he does not have any pro experience (He asked that the Japanese pro teams not draft him, so he could play MLB…)

Could have done this the Easy Way, or the Hard Way–but then again, there is only 1 way for Satan–the way that is going to pay HIM the fattest check possible. So any discussion of Jason Varitek coming back, perhaps catching fewer games, and mentoring some young ‘uns, has been completely eliminated from the table: “Jason Varitek intends on being a full-time player for many years to come. He’s in great shape. His defense, his game-calling skills, his leadership skills are extraordinary and at the highest level. There’s no catcher that has a higher win-loss percentage starting a game than Jason Varitek…”

You’re right, Satan, Jason Varitek is a superb catcher/game caller–But it’s the sucking, gaping black hole he is offensively that has the rest of us worried….

As I have said before–I am a huge fan of Jason Varitek–but giving him anything more that $8-9 million a year for 2 years, POSSIBLY with a 3rd option year–is…just…plain…crazy…

    Coming up: Some important dates:

Pitchers and Catchers: Report on February 12th–1st workout the 14th

Rest of Team: Report of February 16, with 1st full team workout on February 18th…

One more day to Turkey Day!
