    November 17, 2008:
    MVP Awards Week…

Posted by Christine E. at 12:44 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (3)

Some random thoughts while we wait for the AL MVP to be announced tomorrow…

Could it be? Could it possibly be? Could it be possible that the Tiger want JULIO LUGO??? Apparently, they are looking for a shortstop, and the Sox are looking at…pitchers Nate Robinson, or DONTRELLE WILLIS????? Holy Buckets! I know he has sucked in recent years, but remember how wonderful he was when he was with the Marlins? Both teams are working under the assumption that these players could rebound and become integral parts of their lineups–although in Lugo’s case, I am not sure what he would be bouncing back TO….Although, as the player with the lowest BA with running in scoring position last year, it can only get better from here…

Not sure why this is coming out NOW, when the time for it to has LONG passed–but, apparently, the Sox were going to suspend Manny for his “my knees are hurting me and I need a 2-week vacation (aka DL stint) to make me right again…” The letter of suspension was sent to him, Satan, Major League Baseball and the Players Association on July 25th, basically says that he has better get his ass out on that field of he would be suspended the next day. A couple of hours later–surprise–Manny informed the team that he would play. Of course, less than a week later he was trade to the Dodgers where he ran without ANY indication of knee pain–AT ALL…

Ya know what the 2nd fun-est (I know it’s not really a word…) thing about the Skanks sucking? (Obviously the fun-est thing of all is the fact they suck) When they scramble around, giving HUMONGOUS and ridiculous contracts to aging superstars…Yeah, sure, maybe they will get a year or 2 of brilliance out of them, but c’mon–does anyone REALLY believe that CC Sabathia will be worth $23+ million in 3 or 4 years? The rumored deal is to be greater than Johan Santana’s 6 year, $137.5 million Mets deal (also another crazy deal) about $140 over 6…But the kicker is that the Skanks are pulling a Ranges deal, offering $30 million MORE than the next team, the Tigers who offered Sabathia a $110 million contract. Just link when the Rangers wanted to sign A-Fraud. The closet deal to the one he got (10 years, $250 million) was like $160 million. Why do that???? And we all know how THAT turned out–he bailed the SECOND he was able…

And it seems that Satan is backing away from the “Jorge Posada-type” numbers he has been throwing out for Jason Varitek. Its looking like a $10-11 million a year, 2-4 year deal will get it done. Rumors around town say that the Angels and the Tigers, and quite possibly the Skanks (if Posada can’t catch after he recovers from his surgery) are in the ‘Tek sweepstakes, in addition to the Sox….My personal feeling? A 2 year contract, with a 3rd year option, $8-9 million a year…

Congratulations to Kevin Youkilis, who got married last weekend in Mexico…

On the mend: Nearly a month after Mike Lowell’s hip surgery, his recovery is going well. He is off crutches and doing well. From the Dr who did the surgery, Dr Bryan Kelly: “I think there’s a good chance he’ll be the same. The pro athletes that I’ve dealt with that have this type of surgery are typically able to get back to their full level of function without losing much. If there is some degree of permanent damage, is that damage going to become progressively worse? It probably has more to do with longevity of one’s career. Will he come back like he was? That’s what we all want to know. I’m optimistic.” Surgery of this type generally has a 4-6 month recovery time

Coming up: The final 2 “regular” Awards are announced. Today, the NL MVP (Albert Pujols? Ryan Howard?), tomorrow, the AL MVP (Dustin Pedroia? Someone else?) Who will it be?
