    November 14, 2008:
    Silver and Gold….

Posted by Christine E. at 1:53 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

All I can say is, if Dustin Pedroia does not win AL MVP when it’s announced, there is something seriously wrong with the system. Especially since the hardware, keeps coming…

And yesterday was no different, as Dustin Pedroia was awarded the American League Silver Slugger Award for 2nd base, which is only the 4th time a Red Sox player won a Gold Glove AND a Silver Slugger in the Same season: Jason Varitek wont both in 2005 (Oh, how FAR we have fallen) Ellis Burks won in 1990, and Dwight Evan won them in 1981…

The award, which began in 1980, recognizes the “best offensive production at each position”, with the winners being voted for by coaches and manager. Each winner will receive a specially crafted trophy sometime in 2009…

The best of the Rest in the AL:

    C Joe Mauer, Minnesota

1B Justin Morneau, Minnesota (He DID win the home run derby, even if it was by a technicality…)

3B Alex Rodriguez, Skanks (Yuk, but not surprising)

SS Derek Jeter, Skanks (Are you KIDDING me???? UGH)

OF Josh Hamilton, Rangers (Well deserved–and not the least bit surprising)

    OF Carlos Quentin, White Sox

    OF Grady Sizemore, Cleveland

DH Aubrey Huff, Baltimore (would have been Big Papi, if not for the wrist thing…)

And in case you were wondering, Ryan Braun of the Brewers, Matt Holliday of the Rockies and Ryan Ludwick of the Cardinals were the NL outfield recipients–not a Manny Ramirez among them…

Now, if MLB had an award category for the “Pitcher who makes you want to throw up or pull out your hair when he picthes” Daisuke would win hands down. Actually, that would not be a bad idea. They can get Maalox to sponsor it! We already have an award given out by Rolaids, why not Maalox?

But since they do not, Daisuke will have to settle for placing 4th in the Cy Young balloting, behind Francisco Rodriguez, Roy Halladay, and winner Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians….This is the 2nd time in as many years a Red Sox pitcher made the top 5–Josh Beckett (who should have won last year) came in 2nd to another Cleveland pitcher–CC Sabathia…

And, just for the hell of it: I made this prediction in July that Daisuke would have a record of 17-8 with a 3.52 ERA for the 2008 campaign. How he ended up? 18-3 (4th in the AL) with a 2.90 ERA (3rd in the AL)…

Jed Lowrie has this to say about fielding behind Daisuke: “He gets himself into some tough spots and gets himself out of it. It’s pretty fun to play behind him. A little nerve-wracking, but it’s pretty fun to watch.”

Could not have said it better myself, Jed…

Coming up: With today being the 1st day free agents can negotiate with teams other than their current one, the Hot Stove should starting heating up. Satan’s inflammatory remarks about looking forward to …for the 1st time, taking serious offers” for Manny Ramirez should certainly help that process along…What a skeezy JERK…but totally in character….

Very nice Red Sox Nation information. I hope to be in Beantown for a game this summer.
