Red Sox 1, Tampa Bay 3:
    Playing with House Money…

Posted by Christine E. at 11:53 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

5 years ago, I was inconsolable and heartbroken when the Red Sox lost game 7 to the Skanks. Part of the reason, I’m sure, is the year after year after year of abuse the Sox suffered at the hands of the “Evil Empire”. Another part, was the fact that Grady Little left Pedro in far…too…long…, causing the heartbreaking loss that just added to the pain of losing a game the Sox should have won….Finally, the horribleness of living in Yankeeland, where every Skankee fan made sure to take the time (even going out of their way sometimes) to rub it in my face, despite the fact that I was plainly hurting…

    This year, not so much…

Don’t get me wrong, I am disappointed that the Sox did not beat the Rays and advance to the World Series, but after that astounding win on Thursday night, and the gutsy and smart pitching of Josh Beckett to actually get the Sox to Game 7, how can I be heartbroken? They gave it a good run, and there is no shame in that–The Sox were at this point for the THIRD time in 4 years–can’t expect to win them all…

And we got 2 extra days of baseball, by rights, we should have not had–the Red Sox season should have been over 4 days ago….Hell, I didn’t think the Sox would get past the Angels, who had stomped on them all year, so I consider the last two weeks, a gift….

    Some random thoughts:

Jon Lester pitched well enough to win last night (118 pitches over 7 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits (including 2 homers) while walking 3 and striking out 8. From Jon: “…very proud. It’s just a testament to the character that’s in this clubhouse, and the will and the fight. Nobody gave up. Everybody still believed, down, 3-1, and we kept fighting to move on and got to Game 7 and still kept fighting. And it just didn’t go our way.”

And the Sox had plenty of chances to score, even having the bases loaded in the 8th, but they just could not scratch any other runs through…Dustin Pedroia’s homer in the 1st was it…

Does anyone know who I can contact at TBS to lodge a complaint on the absolutely SH*TFUL coverage they gave to the ALCS? Anyone? Bueller?

Matt Garza seems to have a spitting problem–he was frothing at the mouth so bad, looked like freakin Cujo–aren’t there shots for that???

Mike Lowell is getting his right hip labrum repaired today–hopefully, he will get through that quickly and safely, and be 100% for Spring Training….

Could we have seen the last of Jason Varitek? Could last night really have been it? Could he really be playing for another team next year? In a normal world I would say no–But Scott Boras is his agent…

Derek Lowe will be a Free Agent this winter–and wants to come back to the East Coast, which probable means he will pitch for the Mets or the Skanks–he would LOVE to pitch for the Sox again–but the Sox are not interested in going down that path again…

Tito is 9-2 in elimination games, only losing last night’s and the game 3 sweep by the White Sox in 2005…

So the Sox are going to go after Padres ace Jake Peavy. He currently has a contract until 2012–worth $63.5 million, with a $22 million option for 2013. And if he was traded, he wants an iron-clad no trade clause. The Skanks, Angels and Rangers are also in the mix–All AL Teams, despite the fact that Peavy has expressed a desire to stay in the NL… Fortunately, Scott Boras is NOT his agent… He was 10-11 with a 2.85 ERA in 2008…

The World Series begins Wednesday on FOX. I expect a Tampa Bay-Phillies World series to be WAY boring, and probably will not watch any of it. And, for the record: Tampa Bay in 5….

Oh, and By the By? It is 169 days, or 5 months and 17 days until Opening Day, 2009–and guess who the Sox play 1st?

    Yep, Tampa Bay.
