    October 16, 2008:
Is Tonight the Last Game of 2008?

Posted by Christine E. at 1:30 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

At this point, if the Sox do not advance, what happened last night will make THAT pill much easier to swallow: The Phillies beat the Dodgers, 5-1, to claim the National League Pennant, due in large part to Raphael Furcal channeling Julio Lugo and making THREE errors in the 5th inning. This is the Phillies 1st World Series since 1993.

So Manny is Going Home! Even IF the Sox advanced, there will be no Manny vs Red Sox showdown, or Red Sox vs Red Sox West–and I, for one, outdo not be happier. HA HA Manny, your bad behavior will not be rewarded this year!

But, if it is Tampa Bay and the Phillies, that may be one of the most BORING World Series in recent history…and I probably won’t be watching much. But, for the record, I will be cheering for Tampa Bay.

But, for now, the Sox are still part of the mix, and, with Joe Maddon’s change of pitchers from James Sheilds (who picthed very well Friday night, despite getting the loss) to Scott Kasmir, who has struggled against the Sox, I definitely like our chances for game 5….

And if the Sox can at least win this game, and get themselves back to the Trop, so that the Rays do not do their celebrating in our house, I can live with that….

I wrote this on October 18, 2007–when the Sox were down 1-3 against Cleveland, after the game before Tim Wakefield tanked and MDC came and could not stop the bleeding (sound familiar)?:

But it just doesn’t FEEL the same this year…and you know what? I hope I am completely and utterly wrong….

    Dismal Stats for a Thursday:

2007: Last 3 games: 8.00 ERA from the pitching staff…Oh, and they have been outscored 24-11–and have lost all 3 games…

For a frame of reference, here is more dismal stats for a Thursday–a year to the day later…

2008: Last 3 games: 8.57 ERA from the pitching staff…Oh, and they have been outscored 31-13–and have lost all 3 games…

And another BIG difference this year? Daisuke is on the mound tonight, not Josh Beckett, although, in light of Josh’s recent performance, I would not feel any better about him being out there…The only pitcher the Sox have right now that I feel confident in is Jon Lester, because I believe his struggles in the last game were totally a fluke. But we won’t see Jon Lester unless we get to Game 7…

No one would be happier that me if the Sox could do this–I just don’t think its their time again this year…

I heard some disturbing news the other day, that Jason Varitek was mad that he was replaced in a game with a pinch hitter. Of course, unless there is a direct quote, you take it with a grain of salt, but if it is the case, given that he has been ABSYMAL (he is hitting 3 for 24, or .125), it is very disappointing….

And what CANNOT be a good sign, (pun completely unintended) the 60’x60′ Citgo Sign at Fenway caught fire yesterday. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the sign, which has lived n that spot for nearly 70 years, has some melted and blackened areas…

I mentioned the other day that I think it SUCKS that some fans were actually BOOING the Sox during the last couple of games. Here is a GREAT story from Big Papi on that: “I was walking back to the dugout the other night and I saw one fan booing. And then I saw the guy next to him (elbow the booing fan) and say, `What the (expletive) are you doing?'”

And by now, we have all heard that Madonna and her husband, Guy Ricthie, have some clean and finally filed for divorce. We also all know that A-Fraud divorce from him wife, Cynthia, was finalized about a month ago. So, how soon do you think they will hook up in public? A pathetic attempt for relevancy–for both of them…

Coming up: This may be it. Daisuke vs Scott Kasmir, who, hopefully, continues his lack of effectiveness against the Sox, for the 5th game of hte series, and the final game at Fenway Park. Just need to win this one, then we’ll worry about Game 6. 1st pitch 8:07pm.

    Get it done, Daisuke….
