    Red Sox 3, Toronto 0:
    Clinching at home…

Posted by Christine E. at 12:02 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

With the last road trip of the Regular Season completed for 2008 (The Sox went 3-3 in that span), The Boston Red Sox will be able to do something they have not done in a while–clinch a spot in the Postseason at home.

There are 7 games left to play, and the Sox Magic # stands at 1 (The Skanks could not accommodate by losing to the Oreos in the last game in the “old” Skankee Stadium last night). So, unless the Sox stage a cataclysmic collapse and lose every game, and the Twins and Skanks win every game, the Sox will be asked to the dance for the 5th time in the last 6 seasons…

How bout Daisuke? Yes, he threw 109 pitches–pretty much par for the course–but instead of being over 5 innings (which is the norm) he threw those 109 pitches (69 for strikes) over seven (count ‘em) SEVEN innings–and it was 7 innings of 2 hit, scoreless baseball. He also walked 2 and struck out 6, bringing his record to 18-2…Okajima and Papelbon also each threw a scoreless inning of work…

So the Sox end the Road Season 39-42, which is a damn sight better than I thought they would do….

And how bout Bartolo Colon? Goes home to the Dominican Republic to deal with some personal stuff–and decides he does not want to come back. From Tito: “He got home for the personal stuff and decided that he just wasn’t real comfortable [returning]. He was either going to be in the bullpen or back up a starter here.” While its true the chance was slim he would make the postseason roster, it’s a pretty crappy thank you for the ONLY team who was willing to give you a chance this year…The Sox have placed him on the suspended list, which means they do not have to pay him for the rest of the season…

I know I should not be happy about injuries to anyone, but Julio Lugo suffered ANOTHER setback in his rehab this weekend, all but insuring he is done for the season–I’m sorry, but I really think this is a good thing. My husband thinks I should sent him a “Get well…SLOWLY” card…

What is NOT a good thing is the fact that JD Drew just cannot seem to shake the crappy back thing, and Mike Lowell is trying everything short of having a shaman pray over him to get his hit calm enough to play….

It will be interesting to see what happens when Tito has to choose his playoff roster for the ALDS. At this point, it looks like the Sox will be the Wild Card winner, and will be playing the Angels–but will they carry 10 or 11 pitchers for the 1st round? And who would be the 4th starter? Wake or Byrd. Then one of them would go into the bullpen, but then who gets lefts behind there? Should be interesting, no matter what the outcome…

So the Skanks had their last night in their old stadium last night–with all the pomp and circumstance you would expect. And who were 2 notable Skanks who were not even mentioned? Joe Torre and Roger Clemens. Fat Boy Roger I could see, but Torre? The man that helped them dominate for so many years??? Classy, yeah, right…

Tonight: Josh Beckett kicks off the final home stand of the 2008 Campaign (regular season) and the 4 game series against Cleveland. Zach Jackson, who replaced Paul Byrd in the Cleveland rotation, will pitch for the Indians. 1st pitch 7:05pm
