    Red Sox 7, Rangers 2:
Back to the 2/3’s thing again…

Posted by Christine E. at 11:37 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Even though there was no sweep to be had, the Sox won their 6th series in a row this weekend, thanks to some stellar pitching from Josh Beckett (5 inning of no-run, 4 hit ball, while walking 0 and striking out 7) and last night from Paul Byrd (6 2/3 innings of shut out 3-hit ball while striking out 4 and walking 3–Paul threw 102 pitches in his outing, 64 for strikes…) For Tim Wakefield, his 500th appearance with the Red Sox was also his shortest–ever, going with 1 2/3 of an inning, giving up 7 runs on 4 hits while walking 4 and striking out 0–I am not even sure how you get 7 runs out of that, but he did….

And, in REALLY cool news, the Toronto Blue Jays and their 8 (!) game winning streak, have pushed he Skanks into FOURTH PLACE, 10 games behind Tampa Bay, and a 1% chance of making the play offs…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….

Also, thanks, in part, to Toronto sweeping the Rays, the Sox return home, 1.5 games behind the Rays in the AL East, and 6.5 games ahead of the spiraling Minnesota Twins…

Never thought I would be doing this…with…Tampa Bay, but let’s break it down:

If the Sox Sweep: The Sox will be 1.5 games ahead of Tampa Bay, regaining 1st place.

If the Sox win 2: The Sox will be .5 games behind Tampa Bay, remaining in 2nd place

If Tampa Bay wins 2: The Sox will be 2.5 games behind Tampa Bay, remaining in 2nd place

If Tampa Bay Sweeps: The Sox will be 4.5 games behind Tampa Bay, remaining in 2nd place, probably for good…

So, bottom line, the Sox could really use a sweep about now, and its quiet possible, as the Rays are not playing like the Rays that swept the Sox in July. And the Sox are very hot right now, and the key players (Lowell, Beckett, soon to be Drew) are all healthy and ready to go…

Although the whole “My hand is not OK.” It’s still bugging me once in awhile but we’re winning, so I don’t pay attention to it…No pain, just clicking…Since I got this thing, my whole swing has changed, you know? I mentally try to keep the same approach going to the plate and not think about it but it’s hard, man, really tough.” stuff from Big Papi who homered for the 1st time in 19 games in yesterday’s game, makes me very nervous…

For now, I am going to stick with the prediction I have been going with all year–there will be no sweep, someone will win 2–just not sure WHO right now….Although each team has swept all of their home games this year, so a sweep COULD happen….and there is still the matter of the 3 games NEXT week in Florida…

Looks like Bartolo Colon will definitely be back for the doubleheader against Toronto on Saturday, having completed his last rehab start for Pawtucket last night–against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Skankees….He pitched brilliantly over 7 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits, while striking out three–Unfortunately, it was not enough for the win, as Pawtucket ended up losing 2-0 in the 10th, ending their 2008 campaign….

Not sure when JD Drew will be back tho–he has been asking to be activated from the DL, where he has been since August 19th, but the Sox still have concerns about his back…

1,050: The number of the most relief appearances EVER by a right hander, is currently held by Kent Tekulve. Mike Timlin is sitting at 1,049….

Coming up: Back to Fenway Park for the big showdown against….Tampa Bay (yeah, that is STILL weird to hear.) in the 1st game of the 3 games series that could see the Sox back on top of the AL Eats, Jon Lester gets the start. Starting for the Rays is Edwin Jackson. 1st pitch 7:05pm
