…or as it will undoubtedly be come to known as, the day the bats came alive in Red Sox Nation. This trade, is a good thing. No if, ands, or buts about it. Manny had to go. He was nothing but a distraction at this point and to make matters worse, he was sitting out in crucial spots of games and really not contributing anything.
At first, I dismissed these actions as Manny’s July Itch. You know, the couple of weeks in July that Manny talks about being traded and how he doesn’t like it in Boston, yadda, yadda, yadda.
This year, the itch was more of a scratch that wouldn’t go away. So now Manny is gone. This is a good thing for the Boston Red Sox as a team. Is it a good thing for the fans? I don’t think so. I’ll tell you why. Remember back in the day, when the Red Sox weren’t World Champions and we typically didn’t expect them to win in the ALCS? Remember when Manny’s antics were the only thing entertaining about watching the Boston Red Sox? Remember when Kevin Millar and the “bunch of idiots” were fun to watch even when they weren’t winning? That’s what baseball is all about to me. Sure, I love to see the Sox win, who doesn’t? I want them to win every game, but the beauty of the team is how much they feel like kids in a school yard playing ball.
I will miss Manny going into the Green Monster to use the “facilities” or smoke a J, you know, whatever he was doing in there. I will miss Manny hugging Big Papi. I will miss Manny stroking Julian Tavarez’s head. I will miss Manny’s clutch hitting and the way he plays the carom off the Monster (which Jason Bay will learn to do in time.)
Manny, it was a great run. I, along with many others in the Nation will miss you. Enjoy the West Coast and remember, Nomar doesn’t win championships, Papi does.
