    Red Sox 2, Angels 6:
    A Loss I will Gladly Take…

Posted by Christine E. at 12:38 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

..It was the 1st no-hitter at Fenway against the Sox since 1958 that would have been tougher to swallow…

Does anyone now the best place to send something to Dustin Pedroia? I wanted to send a fruit basket or something, since he saved the Sox bacon last night, breaking up John Lackey’s (John LACKEY!!!!) no-hitter 1 out into the 9th inning–and then Youkilis backing him up with a 2-run shot onto the Green Monster. And you could TELL Lackey was pissed towards the end…

I was really sweating this as the game progresses. I kept saying “WOW, a NO-HITTER in progress” about every 5 minutes form the 6th inning on….maybe it WORKED….

While we cannot blame Lackey’s no-Hit bid on the pitching staff–we can firmly plant this loss right in the collective lap of Clay Buchholz and Craig Hansen–could there possibly be a WORSE tandem in baseball right now? Not only does Buchholz give up 4 runs on his own, the two runners Hansen inherited form Bucholtz? Was there ever any DOUBT those puppies would score???

    Look at these lines:

Buchholz, with his 6th loss (current record 2-6 with a 5.94 ERA) He threw 90 pitches over 6 1/3 innings last night, (57 for strikes) giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits (including a home run) while striking out 5 and walking 3.

Then Hansen finished the 6th inning, allowing the 2 runners left on base by Buchholz, and allowed (what a shocker) a walk. He threw 12 pitches, 8 for strikes…and has a beauteous 5.58 ERA. Yeah, I know his line doe not LOOK that bad–but it’s just more of the same…

It should be noted that Okajima and Papelbon each pitched perfect innings, with Pap getting 2 strikeouts in his frame. And let’s hope that Okajima has finally righted his ship–he last couple of outings have been very good…

And the Sox, who, prior to this home stand, had only lost 13 games at Fenway, have only won ONE game in the last 5…They are now 2 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East (That is STILL So weird to say…) but since the Skanks lost as well, having their own home stand trouble, there is still 2 games between the Sox and the Skanks…

DL update: David Aardsma, threw a side session yesterday, as he continues his recovery form a right groin strain, which put him on the DL on the 20th of July. While not ready for game action yet, both Tito and Aardsma are happy with his progress, which they would gauge at about 85-90%

Julio Lugo is not faring as well in his recovery back form his left quad strain/tear/rupture/whatever it is this week, and will not be ready to even resume baseball activities in the near future…No worries, Julio, the Sox are soldiering on without you. Take your time…

Which brings me to my next question. WHY is the question even being asked with regard to getting another shortstop? Jed Lowrie and Alex Cora are doing FINE–do people really think Julio Lugo has does a better job than these 2? Yes, Jed Lowrie is green, and doesn’t have the greatest range in the world (but neither does Derek Jeter, and people think he is better than he actually is) but he is not making major errors that are leading to losing games…Personally, I think he and Cora are a significant UPGRADE to Lugo….

After a successful side session yesterday for Bartolo Colon, Two more are on tap, then the Sox will make the determination as to his next step…If he is healthy and effective, his return will not come soon enough to get Buchholz the hell out of this rotation…

Tonight: The Sox try to salvage at least 1 win out of this abysmal series with the Angels. Josh Becket (who perhaps will get some run support…Please?) will throw 1st pitch at 7:05pm. He is opposed by Joe Saunders for the Angels.
