While the box score and the pitching lines will not reflect it–this was a much more tense game than meets the eye. Clay Buchholtz, throwing 99 pitches (63 for strikes) and going only 5.1 innings and giving up 3 runs on 7 hits (including 2 homers), while walking 2 and striking out 7.
As always, the unsung heroes of an extra inning game is the bullpen (especially when the starter cannot get out of the 6th inning, and leave them 5+ to pitch.) Most notably was the GREAT performance by Dustin Masterson, in his 1st outing as a reliever, throws 27 pitches over 2.2 innings–with 20 (yes TWENTY) of them for strikes. He also gave up no hits and struck out 3…Hopefully this will be the norm, rather than the exception…If it is, this will do a TON to stabilize a whacked out bullpen
Okajima and Delcarmen also did well in their hitless 2 innings of work between them with 2 strikeouts for Delcarmen and a walk for Okajima….
Then we have Craig Hansen inexplicably on the mound in the 12th inning. I guess the Sox felt that a 3 run lead was enough to take the pressure off Hansen–well, guess again. Hansen, manages to give up 2 hits (and one of them should have been an error on him) and walk the bases loaded…he also threw 22 pitches–and 10 of them were balls….While his line is not horrible–and again it FELT much worse than this while I was watching it—am I the only one who feels he cannot find the strike zone with a flashlight and a map????
And W…T…F…Is Manny trying to pull NOW??? 2 days before David Ortiz is to come back (Which I think has alot to do with it) and all of a sudden his KNEE hurts????? From Tito: “He just showed up this morning. We were kind of, weren’t ready for that. ‘My right knee hurts.’ There was nothing on the report last night. I didn’t come in waiting for that one, so it must have gotten tight overnight.” Manny is on record as saying he has had this “pain” for “about a week” and “I’ve just been trying to play it out. I decided it was time to give it a rest.” and he is “day to day” Jackass….He reallyREALLY needs to go away….
Coming up: An off day today (Do NOT even get me started) then Josh Beckett kicks off the 9 game home stand with the 1st of 3 against the Skanks (who have won their last 6 in a row.) throwing 1st pitch 7:05pm. Joba Chamberlain gets the nod for the Skanks…
