Holy Buckets! I am so glad I did not watch too much baseball this weekend….
I wanted to, I really did. I sat down at 10:00pm on Friday, all excited to be watching baseball for the 1st time since Sunday. And THAT excited and happy feeling soon faded as Clay Buchholtz gave up run…after…run…after…run–EIGHT in all. So, tell me again, why bringing this guy back to the bigs was such a great idea?
But the guy he replaced, Justin Masterson is back in the bigs anyway, due to David Aarsdma going on the DL this weekend with a strained right groin. Masterson, who was optioned to Pawtucket on July 5th, will take Aardsma’s spot in the bullpen. Will be interesting to see what happens (and who will be out in the cold) when he returns…Perhaps then Masterson can return to the rotation–and get Buchholz the hell out of it???
Some good news on a weekend when there was precious little of it: David Ortiz, in 3 games of this rehab assignment with Pawtucket, hit a homer in EVERY ONE…Whooo Hoo! Yeah, I know, its only AAA Ball. But the fact that he is able to hit like that without pain or impingement is a VERY GOOD THING….He took yesterday off and will resume his rehab activities with Single A Portland tonight. Unless everything falls apart, Big Papi will be back at the Fens for Friday night’s game vs the Skanks. And not a moment too soon, as this team seems to need SOMETHING…
Not that Beckett (A complete game, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 6) or Wakefield (7 IP, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits (including 2 homers), while walking 0 and striking out 1) did particularly bad–as a matter of fact, both pitched well enough for the win–but over the whole series, the Sox only plated 8, yes EIGHT runs….and we dont even want to talk about the errors made in the games which cause TONS of runs to be unearned….
So, the lead in the AL East is gone, back to 1/2 games behind the Rays–and the Skanks are surging (as you KNEW they would) to 4 games behind the Sox–will 3 games coming up this weekend…the Sox could conceivably be in THIRD place by this time next week…UGH….
Tonight: The Sox kick off 3 in Seattle, with Washington native Jon Lester getting the start, opposed by Jarrod Washburn for the Mariners–middle of the night start: 10:05pm…
