Red Sox 6, Oreos 10: Not liking the way this cookie is crumbling…

Posted by Christine E. at 1:13 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

Holy Buckets! WHAT just happened here????

Josh Beckett, not throwing the best game of his life (IP, giving up 4 runs and 8 hits while striking out 3 and walking 1) but certainly good enough to win–Until Okajima stepped in. He has pitched 5 1/3 innings against Baltimore this year–and has allowed eight runs (or an ERA of 13.50 for those of you playing at home.) And we get THIS: Strikeout/Walk/Double/Walk and Single, then MDC allows one of those base runners to score and the Sox are down 7-6…

But the bizarrest (is that a word?) thing of all? Against ALL OTHER TEAMS, 22 2/3 innings total, Okajima has given up…ONE Run…THAT is a .40 (yes, 40 cents) ERA.

And how we dont even talk about the 3 runs in the 9th inning off of Craig Hansen…UGH…

Looks like Daisuke may be back with the Sox by next week sometime, barring any unforeseen problems from his side sessions this week, which are scheduled for 1 today, and 1 on Friday. After that it’s live hitting, although the Sox are unsure whether that will be in a simulated game situation, or with Pawtucket. Tito weights in: “We’ll probably sit down the next couple of days and discuss with him and the trainers on where it goes from there. I think we’ve got a pretty good idea how we feel about the next couple of weeks with our pitching, how we set up and everything. We just want to make sure we talk to people.” Daisuke left an 8-0 record and a 2.53 ERA when he went on the DL…

Jacoby Ellsbury was back last night, getting the start in Center field in last night’s contest. He also batted leadoff (which is a damn sight better than Julio Lugo leading off.) From Jacoby: “It’s just sore. There’s a big difference between hurting and a little bit of soreness. I’ll be sore for a little while, but it will be fine, so I’m ready to go. You never feel 100 percent throughout the whole season in any big body part.”

Less than 24 hours left to enter to win the Boston Red Sox Essential Games of Fenway Park DVD I am giving away. For every comment (No SPAM, please) you leave here at Boston Red Thoughts, you get is an entry in the DVD sweepstakes. I will draw the lucky winner tomorrow morning, before I leave for Boston.

Another side session another step forward: Curt Schilling threw again yesterday, 40 pitches in a bullpen side session–off a mound. And will do it again, probably Friday, depending on how he bounces back…Perhaps the next step will to face hitters? And then is a rehab start at Pawtucket next? Could it really be possible that Curt Schilling could be back within the next month or so???

How is THIS for a shocker: Dontrelle Willis, who was SUCH the Phenom when he played for the fish–DEMOTED to SINGLE A? Holy Buckets!!! He signed a 3-year $29 MILLION contract with the Tigers this past winter, and has been quite the walk-machine: 21 in 11 1/3 innings–and his last outing, which prompted the moved was 4 out (1 1/3 inning) giving up 3 runs on 3 hits (including 2 homers) and 5 walks–Ouch… Highest paid minor leaguer EVER…

Coming up: Game 2 of the 3 games series against the Oreos–hopefully the Sox will fare better in this game–and Bartolo Colon bounces back from his ABYSMAL start of last week–and one suggestion? You might not want to bring Okajima in to face anyone in this game–unless the score is 19-0…Colon is opposed by Garrett Olson, and 1st pitch is 7:05pm
