    Red Sox 8, Skanks 5:
2 out of 3? Definitely Not Bad!

Posted by Christine E. at 11:34 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

Whoo Hoo! While I would have like to swept the Skanks–2 out of 3 is fricken fantastic!

But, I made it as far as the 7th inning before I fell asleep–8:00pm games when the Sox play the Skanks end up being as bad as NightNIGHT games on the left coast…this one was just shy of 4 hours–I was watching a movie when the game started, and when I turned it on at 9:00pm, I was shocked that the Sox were still in the 2nd inning! There is no joy in these games–they just grind and grind and GRIND…

But ya know what the BEST part of this weekend series was? I did not see Derek Jeter (or his obnoxious fist pump) even once! Apparently he has some quad problem and is only returning to baseball activities over the weekend. Unfortunately, we may see him when the Sox head to Skankee stadium for 2 this week…

OK, Big Papi is in a slump–they happen, he is far too good a hitter to not get out of it…I think he is analyzing it enough for the rest of the world–so the rest of the world does not have to make it any worse by constantly harping on this…Can we move on please? There are 149 games left to play–and if he is going to slump, I would rather it be NOW, than in September…

    Moving on…

So this Phil Hughes phenom for the Skanks–39 pitches in the 1st inning, 3-0 on the board for the Sox by the end of it…and finally in the 3rd, he was pulled before he even got an out, and all told gave up six hits and seven runs (six earned).

Unfortunately, Daisuke, despite getting the win, was less than stellar last night as well, throwing an astonishing 116 pitches in 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits, while walking 6 and striking out 2…From Daisuke: “Early on, my teammates got us that big lead…I’m disappointed that I was only able to pitch like I did tonight. For the fact that we won, I have to thank my teammates. For me, it was a stressful performance from the outset.” It was stressful for everyone else as well, since Papelbon and Okajima were not available, and Mike Timlin has yet to record an out while pitching in the bigs this season…

Neat piece of trivia: Even with his abysmal start last night–Daisuke is the 1st pitcher in Red Sox history to have 3 wins by April 14th–EVER….

Remember the story about the construction workers last week who allegedly buried a Sox jersey in a bunch of concrete at the New Skankee stadium? Well, the Skanks originally were like “ha ha, it’s a myth, never happened” Now, we hear yesterday that they dug up the area with jackhammers (on a Sunday no less-probably some serious overtime), and there actually WAS a Sox jersey there–now they are threatening to bring criminal charges and/or SUE this worker…

Bartolo Colon has been cleared to resume baseball activities, after being on the minor league DL (theirs is only 7 days) with a strained right oblique.

Coming up: The Sox will play Cleveland for the 1st time since facing them in Game 7 of the ALCS last year, These 2 games are the only 2 played at The Jake (I refuse to call it Progressive Field) by the Sox this year…Jon Lester gets the start, and is opposed by Indians pitcher Jake Westbrook–1st pitch 7:05pm..Hopefully we will get the electric stuff-lights out Jon Lester…

Christine, sorry I haven’t been around much. I had my bi annual trade show the past 2 weeks and I’ve been swamped.

Great games this weekend, and when you run into a guy like Wang pitching like he did Friday, you just tip your cap and move on.

Slappy had a rotten weekend, which made me smile.
