    April 8, 2008:
    Happy Ring Day!

Posted by Christine E. at 10:59 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

In just over an hour (whomever decided to have the ring ceremony on at 1:15 pm during the week should be left naked outside of Yankee Stadium–only wearing a Red Sox hat..) the Red Sox will get their 2007 World Series rings and play their 1st game at home to kick off the 2008 campaign at Fenway Park…

Hopefully they will put the past couple of week behind them quickly and move on to be the team that will battle to defend their World Series title…

But, think about it–TiVo or Live, we are getting to see the Red Sox–THE BOSTON RED SOX–receive their SECOND World Series rings–in 4 years! How many fans before us waited and waited and WAITED for a World Series victory that never came? We are very lucky…and what about all the little kids who did not grow up with years and years of angst (like we did). They have no idea…

My only hope is that that Terry guy from 04 doesn’t write and sing another horrendous song–fortunately, Steinberg is in LA (as evidenced by the excesses that were the exhibition game at the Coliseum…) so hopefully this has all the good and none of the bad…

In any event, my TiVo is armed and ready, as I am one of those folks who need to work today, rather than be home watching the festivities.

On Monday, Bobby Doerr turned 90–and in honor of that, the Governor of Oregon, declared April 7th Bobby Doerr Day. From Governor Kulongoski’s proclamation: “It is appropriate to thank and honor this accomplished and most modest gentleman as an Oregon legend…” Due to illness and age, Bobby will not be joining teammate Johnny Pesky at Fenway…The Sox retired his Jersey (#1) in 1988…

OK, who has April 4th in the injury pool? Yep, it’s happened already–Bartolo Colon, who had a fairly good start on Opening Day at Pawtucket, has pain in his right oblique (How can he even FIND his oblique muscles???) So now he is on the minor league DL, retro to April 4th, and will miss at least 1 start in Pawtucket…

Mike Timlin fared pretty well in his 1st rehab outing, throwing 18 pitches (12 for strikes) over a scoreless inning worth of work, giving up 2 hits, and striking out 1…He is rehabbing a laceration in his right ring finger, and has been on the DL, retroactive to March 20th, since the 28th. Looks like 1 more outing at Pawtucket, and he will be back with the Sox…

Will be interesting to see this hot and new powerful lineup the Tigers paid a ton of money for–I’m sorry, I am not the least bit impressed with Miguel Cabrera. Yes, he is a good hitter, but I think he needs to get into shape–and grow up…

Coming up: Daisuke will pitch his 3rd season opener–this season–as he takes the mound at Fenway Park to kick off the 2008 home campaign. 1st pitch is 2:05pm. He is opposed by Mr Anger Management himself–Kenny Rogers, who takes the mound for Detroit.
