    Red Sox 1, Mets 1:
This just keeps getting better and better…

Posted by Christine E. at 12:15 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

Two weeks today, the Sox will play their 1st game of the 2008 campaign–in Japan. Three weeks today, the Sox will play their 1st game that isn’t on at 6:00 in the morning–but in the middle of the night (10:05pm) has that ever happened before that the Sox play a nightNIGHT game in April? Heck of an April Fools joke…

And apparently Beckett’s back is not doing well. Yes, it’s only muscular, but the media was greeted with a very cranky Josh Beckett yesterday (although I would have been cranky too, with some of the STUPID questions they were asking him…). It seemed like they were trying to get him to place the blame somewhere–these things happen–there is no one to blame: From Josh: “If I would have had as much progress from yesterday to today as I had from the first day to the second day, I wouldn’t have ruled that out (being ready to start in Japan)…It probably would have been better for me to talk to yesterday, because I was a little more optimistic.” As far as his progress: “…We’re just doing what we’re saying, going day to day on how I feel. I pretty much have an interview with two or three doctors every day and I report to the manager or the pitching coach and my trainer.”

And how is their fro strange? The starting rotation is dropping like flies due to injury (Schilling, Beckett) or struggling like mad (Daisuke–who also has a pregnant wife due next week and Buchholz) so the staff ace may be one of the most unlikely–3rd or 4th starter Jon Lester, who may actually end up starting the 1st game in Japan. Pitching very well yesterday (against Johan Santana no less…) Jon threw 4 innings, giving up only 2 hits (and zero runs) while walking 1 and striking out 5. The teams played until the 10th inning, before calling it a tie…

I never want to see any player get hurt (most of the time) I cannot help but feel a tiny bit (OK, more than tiny) relieved that Julio Lugo isn’t able to play because of his nagging back woes. Today will be the 9th game he will miss because of the injury. Tito weighs in: “I guess maybe I thought that this was a strain that would keep us out a couple days…the examination was good, he’s just not ready to play tomorrow in a game…I think when Lugo tried to play that one day, I think he overdid it a little bit and set himself back…So we need to sit on it a little bit.”

Speaking of sitting–doesn’t look like Coco Crisp is going to be playing anytime soon, either. Still out with a groin problem, which apparently impacts his running to a serious extent, Coco had this to say: “If it was up to my mind, it would be one thing…But it’s up to my body, and when my body says I’m right, I’ll go out there playing. I can’t mess around with this…I’ve got to make sure that’s right…We’ll see. I’m taking it day to day, see how it feels. I come in tomorrow, maybe it feels better.”

Happy Birthday Mike Timlin, who celebrated his 42nd birthday yesterday. His way of celebrating? Taking the whole family fishing…Hey, whatever works…

    Current Sox record: 3-8-1–YUK!

Today: Tim Wakefield will throw 1st pitch today at 1:05pm in Fort Meyers, kicking off a 5-game home stand, with today’s game being played once again against the Mets. Following Wake will be Mike Timlin, Manny Delcarmen and Jonathan Papelbon..

    1. Ted D says:

Christine, I was glad to see quotes from Beckett saying he felt much better today than he did yesterday. Hopefully this is just a temporary setback.

I think Lugo has a bouce back season this year. Hope so, anyway. Hope you and the family are well.
