    February 22, 2008:
    Getting Stranger and Stranger…

Truly…has anyone checked for pods in Manny’s basement? Or proof of a robot or something? First he decides he loves it in Boston and wants the spend the rest of his career here (the same place he spent the 1st 6+ years on his contract trying to get out of it…) THEN, he arrives on time for camp for the 1st time in at least 3 years and says such things as: “I might be late two years in a row…but I’m always on time.” HUH? THEN, he talks to the Press…for 5+ minutes! Not a ton of time, to be sure, but hey, his total interactions with the press in the last year or so probably did not add up to 5 minutes, so this is pretty amazing.

Could Manny be wily enough to be all nice and solicitous now, so that the Sox will get sucked in and activate his options? He has 2 for 09 and 10–for a cool $20 million each… He says he is content to wait: “It’s up to them to say, `OK, we’re going to take (the option). It’s not up to me to go into the office and demand a four-year deal, whatever…No, I’m going come here to play the game, finish my year. If they want me to come back, I’ll come back.” Manny has one of, if not the worse season he has ever had; usually guaranteed 30+ homers, he only had 20 this year, and dipped below a .300 batting average (.296)

And Curt Schilling has been injured fro what? About 15 minutes? And people are already clamoring for his rehab status…Are you kidding me? Could we at least wait a month or so? From Theo: “He’s doing the rehab and our guys will monitor it every step of the way but we’re in the real preliminary phase of this thing…It’s way too early to give any feedback on how it’s going, other than, it’s going….he’s showing up every day at six and attempting to put the work in. I think he’s mentally in a place where he knows he’s got to work hard and be patient in order to get back to a position where he can contribute.”

I am highly amused by the fact that Satan himself, Scott Boras, is suing Gary Sheffield, as he feels that he should get a 5% cut of the 3 year/$39 million contract Sheffield had signed with the Skanks–and personally negotiated with George Steinbrenner, because he had fired Boras prior to the signing. And Boras has been wasting money and resources on this for 5 years…pretty much since the contract was signed. Now, I cannot stand Gary Sheffield–I think he is a train wreck, but he really just cannot keep his mouth shut–and it’s always amusing…When asked about Boras: “Total hell. I wish I would’ve never introduced myself to him. Bad person. Bad person.” and while he cannot speak about ongoing litigation, he has this to say: Once the case is resolved, “No fine is going to be big enough…No suspension is going to be long enough.”

Looks like February 27, 2008 is the day, where the Sox will meet with George W. Bush for the ceremonial meeting to commemorate their World Series win…

This morning was the 1st full squad workout, and the 1st team meeting of the year, and then they are all off to a charity golf tourney–Wow, we have 4 inches of snow, with more sleet and snow on the way, and I bet its 70-80 degrees there…

Christine, did you see Manny fired his agents and signed with Boras?

      Strange doings from Manny indeed.
