    February 18, 2008:
    We’ve Only Just Begun…

My apologies for the Carpenter’s reference, but it seemed fitting for this weekend’s work that is going on in Florida. Yes, pitchers and catchers had their 1st group workout on Saturday, and will continue their work until they have to pack it up to go to Japan (in about 5 weeks) and then the season is just around the corner! Cannot wait!

Some random thoughts from Spring Training (I reallyREALLY cannot wait until baseball season starts–looking for things write about now, SUCKS…):

More than likely a pretty quiet time in Fort Meyers, since most of the team is returning this year from last, the competitions will come from the 1 or 2 open positions in the bullpen, and the battle for 5th starter, cause I am not super confident in Clay Buchholtz’s stamina right now. Do I think he is a potential phenom? Absolutely. Do I think he has the stuff to pitch a whole season? Not so much…So I think that Julian Tavarez or dark horse Kyle Snyder will begin the season in the starting rotation, which means that Clay will be in the bullpen, which will take way perhaps the only spot left…

Right now, if the Sox take an extra pitcher, there are 2 open spots (1 if it goes to Julian Tavarez, Kyle Snyder or Buchholtz) So that leaves 1 (or zero) spots for Craig Hansen, Dan Kolb, Brian Corey and David Aardsma…Now of course, if there are more injuries, there could be more spots, and even if they dont make it the show right out of Spring Training, there is always Pawtucket for a time…

How is this for a classic statement? When reporters asked Josh Beckett if he was upset he did not sign for more money than he did (he is a HUGE bargain at $10 million a year, and then a club option for $12 million in 2011) and he says: “Were you upset that I signed for a discount? I’m not upset.”

Dustin Pedroia seemed a bit cranky over the weekend when asked if he has anything to prove after last year’s performance: “I don’t really care what people think — I don’t really have to prove anything to anybody…”I just have to prove stuff to my teammates…I’m going to go out there and be who I am and if you don’t like it, watch somebody else. That’s all I care about.” OK, Dustin, cool out a bit huh?

How is this for strange? Andy Pettitte’s FATHER went to a guy Andy went to High School with and got him the HGH that Brain McNamee injected into him…

More strange Skankee news: Joe Girardi saw George Steinbrenner when he has he managerial interview in October, and has not seen or spoken to him since. Maybe George really IS giving up the reins to his waffling children….

And how bout this tidbit from Frank eTrueSports: “The Red Sox, with Curt Schilling likely lost for the season, have secretly worked out a number of unsigned free-agent pitchers, including Debbie Clemens, who, according to sources, consistently topped 90 mph on the radar gun.”
