    January 16, 2008:
    A Bunch of Minutiae…

So we are at 28 days and counting, and we are hearing about how the young’uns are all trying to strengthen and bulk up for the upcoming season. The big hope is that Clay Buchholz will be able to handle a full season in the starting rotation this year. Its his goal as well: “I know what it’s going to take for me to have to stay on the team this year…A lot of hard work and dedication goes into being prepared for 162 games and that was my off-season this year, that was (what)I put all the dedication toward. I think I’m right at 191 right now actually. It’s better than the 178 I was last year…I’m going to go into Spring Training and try to earn a spot, but if that doesn’t happen … that’s where I want to be, by the end of the season, by midseason.”

This is no mean feat. Seeing as the same 5 starters from last season are all signed and ready to go: Curt Schilling, Tim Wakefield, Josh Beckett, Daisuke and Jon Lester. The only way that would change at this stage of the game is if Jon Lester is traded–but if he is traded, he’ll more than likely be traded for Johan Santana…which will even lessen Buchholz chanced of making the starting 5…

Also in town for the 2008 rookie Program are Sox prospects Justin Masterson (right handed pitcher) and Shortstop Jed Lowrie. Looks like Jacoby Ellsbury is not–is that a Scott Boras decision? He did not play in enough games to qualify as a rookie last year, so I would say that he should have been at the training, and he is probably the early favorite for Rookie of the Year, if last year’s performance was any indication…

Rounding out the training for this year is: Devern Hansack, Michael Bowden, Hunter Jones, Dustin Richardson, Dusty Brown, Aaron Bates, Bubba Bell, Chris Carter and Jonathan Van Every.–and the only ones I have heard of at this point are Hansack and Bowden…

Looks like Michael Tejada may be in a heap of trouble. Congress has asked that the Justice Department investigate him with regard to him possibly lying to a congressional committee in 2005 about his performance-enhancing drug use…he could be indicted and find himself in the same place Barry Bonds* is…

Another forgotten man: Now that Matt Clement is with St Louis, the role of the Forgotten Man will now be played by Craig Hansen. Remember him? The young-un who would come out of the bullpen in the injury plagued 2006 campaign and pretty much give up a bunch of runs? Well, apparently, he had sleep apnea, in which people stop breathing in their sleep, and then they wake up and start breathing again. It is believed that this contributed significantly to his past inconsistency. Corrective surgery is available for this condition, which Hansen had this year. After a long and slow recovery period, the Sox hope that he will fulfill his projections as an upper tier pitcher…

Christine, I didn’t know that about Hansen; good for him and I hope it helps him.

And Miggy is in big trouble. I think thats what they got Martha Stewart for in the end.

      Hope you are well.
