    January 4, 2008:
    Catching up…

Posted by Christine E. at 12:49 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Red Sox Comment (1)

So after a year + of being the forgotten man of the Boston Red Sox, the Emancipator, Matt Clement, has moved on, signing a 1 year/ $1.5 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. The team also holds a club option for 2009. After being sidelined for well over a year, and having athroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in September 2006, Matt hopes to be 100% when he reports to Spring Training in February. I always liked Matt Clement, and even saw him pitch in a win against Philadelphia in 2005, when he started out going 6-0 and getting on the All-Star team. It was a shame that he went downhill so far and so fast after that. The 33-year old right-hander has a career 4.47 ERA and an 87-86 W/L record…Good Luck and Godspeed, Matt…

Could this be the year for Jim Ed? Will #14 (his number, natch) be the charm? The Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame election will be announced next Tuesday, Jan. 8th with the induction ceremonies on July 27 in Cooperstown, New York. In 2007, Jim Rice received 63.5% of the votes into the Baseball Hall of Fame–problem is, he needs 75% for admittance…If he does not get in this year, he has 1 more year with the writers, then his election would be up to the veterans committee, who also require a 75% vote…

The 2008 candidates number 25 and include 11 newcomers: Brady Anderson, Harold Baines, Rod Beck, Bert Blyleven, Dave Concepcion, Andre Dawson, Shawon Dunston, Chuck Finley, Travis Fryman, Rich Gossage, Tommy John, David Justice, Chuck Knoblauch, Don Mattingly, Mark McGwire, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy, Robb Nen, Dave Parker, Tim Raines, Jim Rice, Jose Rijo, Lee Smith, Todd Stottlemyre and Alan Trammell

Any concern that Hank Steinbrenner is as much of a horses ass as his father, fear not…He is his father’s son–except for the fact that he waffles more than my brand new waffle iron (eg:The A-Fraud crap…) Here is a gem from the man who gave the Twins a deadline during the Winter Meetings with regard to Santana: “We’re not desperate, so we’re not going to chase anything,” but then changed his tune a bit: “In the next two weeks, we’re going to have to get everything done.” And my personal favorite: “The Twins realize our offer is the best one.” How do ya figure, HANK? Melky Cabrera? Are you kidding me?

As part of the Hot Stove/Cool Music weekend, there is a round-table on Saturday, including Theo, Peter Gammon, and a host of baseball luminaries, including Bill James, Scott Boras and GM’s Brian Cashman (Skanks) and J.P. Ricciardi (Blue Jays). Some of the topics on the agenda include: “Building a Winning Enterprise.” and “Inside Baseball” Should make for interesting discussions!

Hey! I’ll give someone a dollar to go and ask Scott Boras why he is such a scurvy creep…

Christine, on the HOF, I think Murphy, Blyleven, Gossage, Jim Ed, Smith, Morris, and Mcgwire deserve to be inducted. McGwire hit 49 HR’s his rookie year and he looked like a pipe cleaner, so the ‘roids didn’t help him hit Home runs as much as some. JMO on some candidates.

Problem with Boras is, I don’t think he CARES if he’s scurvy. 🙂

      Have a great weekend.
