    December 21, 2007:
    Gabe…to Milwaukee???

Posted by Christine E. at 3:04 pm in Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

    My heart is broken…

Gabe Kapler IS returning to baseball for the 2008 campaign, after retiring and managing Single A Greenville in 2007–but he is not coming back to the Sox–he has signed a 1 year, $800K contract with the freakin Milwaukee Brewers. RSN will get to see him tho, when the Brewers come to Fenway May 16-18… From Gabe: “I’ve been incredibly lucky to have the support of the Red Sox organization… I’ve been treated like gold all the way through, from the organization as well as the fans. They’ve been so warm with me over the years, and for that I am eternally grateful. That said, the Brewers have been equally as warm and welcoming. I am incredibly confident I will make the Brewer’s (decision) right. I will make them right.”

Why could Theo not pony up like a million $ to get him back into the fold? Hell, they are paying JD and Julio Lugo ridiculous amounts of money, and they are pretty useless….but no cash for Gabe? That sucks… Gabe played 9 major league seasons prior to his retirement, including 3 with the Sox…and hold a career batting average of .270 over 850 games with 64 homer and 302 RBI’s…

I’ve heard of “the dog ate my homework”, but my dog at my WORLD SERIES BASEBALL??? Remember after the World Series, when ‘Tek said that he carefully put the final baseball, the one that struck out Rockie hitter Seth Smith to end game 4 and win the World Series in his back pocket, and then later on gave the ball to Jonathan Papelbon? Well, apparently, Papelbon’s French bulldog, Boss (I would have thought of Papelbon as more of a Doberman guy myself) likes to chew on baseballs: “…He plays with baseballs like they are his toys. His name is Boss. He jumped up one day on the counter and snatched it. He likes rawhide. He tore that thing to pieces. I’ll keep what’s left of it.” Of course, everyone knows that Papelbon is a complete nut job, so he could be BS-ing everyone…

The affidavit that former major league pitcher Jason Grimsley made in 2006 was unsealed yesterday, as part of the Congressional investigation that is ramping up as a result of the Mitchell Report released a week ago…When the affidavit 1st released in 2006, all of the players names were blacked out, so no one was every really sure who the players were, even though there was a ton of speculation. Now the that the complete version is out, it is known that Grimsley accused Canseco, Dykstra, Glenallen Hill, and Geronimo Berroa of taking steroids; Chuck Knoblauch of using human growth hormone; David Segui and Allen Watson of using performance-enhancing drugs; and Raphael Palmeiro and Pete Incaviglia of taking amphetamines. Incaviglia, Berroa, and Watson were not mentioned in the Mitchell Report.

We haven’t even played the 2008 season yet, and already MLB is looking towards 2009: it’s been announced that Cuba has plans to play in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Cuba’s top sports official, Jose Ramon Fernandez states: “It’s been authorized.” In the inaugural WBC in 2006, Cuba reached the championship game vs Japan, where they were defeated.

Christine, as sad as I am that the Hebrew Hammer won’t be back in Boston, I’m happy for the guy. He’ll probably get to play more, is on an up and coming team in a very winnable division, and will be a great leader for all those younger players.

Pap’s dog eating that ball may be the funniest story of the year.

      Have a great weekend.
