    December 5, 2007:
    In Stasis…

Posted by Christine E. at 1:24 pm in Red Sox,Signings and Trades Comment (1)

As another day passes at the Winter Meetings, the Sox are still in the running for the services of left handed pitcher Johan Santana, and there are a bunch of indications that they are the only ones left.

Apparently, the Skanks are sticking to their word that Monday night at midnight they DID remove their offer from the table, although Hank Steinbrenner seems much more wimpy than his dad, so that could change at any moment. And the Angels and denying they were even in the running…

Right now, the 2 options on the table for the Sox are:

    1. Pitcher Jon Lester, Center Fielder Coco Crisp, Shortstop Jed Lowrie, Pitcher Justin Masterson, and Outfield Prospect Ryan Kalis

    2. Center Fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, Lowrie and Masterson…

From Theo: “It takes two teams to make a trade…Apparently there’s been a lot of speculation out there that we’re close to something big. Until we actually reach agreement, we’re not that close.”

So a nation waits and wonders–and hopes that this will not drag on and ON like the Matsuzaka or JD Drew deal did last year. One good thing–there is no Scott Boras to deal with, although Santana is now rumored to be looking for $20-25 million a year… Another is that apparently, the Twins want to get the issue resolved, one way or another, ASAP…

But the best part about this deal is the Sox DO NOT NEED it…If they get Santana, they get that much better, and that would be WAY cool, but if the Sox cannot get a deal done with the Twins, the starting 9 and rotation that won the Sox a World Series are still intact…

In a blockbuster deal, the Detroit Tigers acquired Marlins’ Miguel Cabrera and Dontrell Willis–by giving up just about everyone decent in their farm system…

Coming as NO surprise to anyone, David Ortiz Papi has, for the 5th year in a row, won the Edgar Martinez award. Given since 1973, and named for the great Seattle Mariner DH since 2004, The Major League Baseball’s Edgar Martinez Award, voted on by team beat writers, broadcasters and AL PR departments, is given to the best DH of the year. Big Papi is the only DH in the game to have won the honor 5 times consecutively. Its namesake won it a total of 5 times over the span of his career…While Papi finished in 1st place unanimously; the other finalists included Jim Thome, Frank Thomas, and Travis Hafner…

And in a completely unfortunate and disappointing development, Jacoby Ellsbury has secured a new agent–Scott Boras. With that move, my admiration for him has decreased somewhat…

This hot stove stuff is driving me nuts: now I’m reading the Mets and Mariners are in the mix. Just get it over with already, one way or another.
