    November 30, 2007:
Could the Santana to Boston deal REALLY happen???

Posted by Christine E. at 12:18 pm in Red Sox,Signings and Trades Comment (1)

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t think there was a snowball’s chance in hell that the Sox would actually be able to get a deal done to get Johan Santana into a Red Sox uniform–unless they gave up Ellsbury, Buchholtz, and every other top prospect in the organization–but if all the reports are to be believed, the Sox are actually the top dog at the point to secure the services of one of the best pitchers in baseball…

According to some media outlets, the deal on the table between the Sox and the Twins is Coco Crisp, Jon Lester, top level Minor League shortstop Jed Lowrie, and another prospect (some say pitching prospect Justin Masterson or Michael Bowden) would go to Minnesota for Santana.

BUT, the deal isn’t finished then. Santana has a no trade clause in his contract with the Twins, and will not waive that unless an extension is negotiated with his new team–and it could get expensive–like $25-$30 million a year expensive. The rumor around town is he is looking for 6 years $150 million…

The Skanks and the Angels are also in the running for Santana’s services as are the Dodgers and Seattle…The Skanks are offering Melky Cabrera, the choice of either Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy, and another prospect. In the grand scheme, the deal the Sox have on the table seems MUCH better than this…

Johan Santana, who will be 29 in March, is a 2 time Cy Young Award winner (2004 and 2006) with a 93-44 career record and ERA of 3.22. During the 2007 campaign he went 15-13 with a 3.33 ERA, striking out 235 in 219 innings. And the best part–no AL/NL transition woes!

So the Winter Meeting start Monday–could there possible be a jaw dropping deal in place before then?

Christine, IMO, the Sox are in this Santana thing to make the Yankees give away the farm to get him. If they make an offer the Twins like and Theo is comfortable with, all the better.

Can you imagine? Beckett, Santana, Matsuzaka, Schilling, and Wake/Bucholz? Unreal.

      Have a great weekend!
