    Red Sox 7, Oakland 3:
    3…is a Magic Number…

Posted by Christine E. at 11:35 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

In more ways than 1…Woo hoo! With the Sox win last night, and the Skankee loss, the Magic number has dropped to 3, the games ahead of the Skanks has risen to 3–all with 5 games to go…

And the best part of the Skankee lost (Does anyone have the address for Tampa Bay? I would like to send them a fruit basket or something….) is that it was the 3rd extra inning game in the last week for them–and at least the 3rd time in that span that Torre opted to use EIGHT OR MORE pitchers in a game…Can we all say…Bullpen Blowout??? HA HA

Holy Buckets! Dare I say it? Unless there is a momentous collapse, I think the Sox may actually do it this time–and win the division. As long as they continue to play good baseball….the pressure is definitely more on the Skanks than the Sox…

And Schilling pitched very well, going 6 innings, and only giving up the 1 run, on the homer to Daric Barton in the 1st. In total, he gave up 6 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 6…

Welcome Back, Manny & Youk: 167 RBI’s between them. One got the start and was relieved in the 5th (Manny) and one came in as a pinch hitter (Youk) but both were back in the lineup for last night’s game. Manny went 1 for 2 with a base hit in last nights contest. And Youk will be returning to his starting duties for this evening game…

Could it finally be happening…NOW? I know I/we have said it all year–but this time it may really happen–and if that is the case it could NOT come at a better time: We’re talking about JD Drew, who has had 18 hits in the last 4 games, including 3 hits in last nights win. His stats for the same 14 game span: .383 with 4 double, 9 RBI’s and 3 homers

Possible Hardware? Jonathan Papelbon has been named a nominee for the 2nd time for the “DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award” (wow, talk about wordy….) noticeable absent from this years list of nominees, which includes San Diego’s Trevor Hoffman, Seattle’s J.J. and Chicago’s Bobby Jenks, among others, is Skankee great, Mariano Rivera–the only 2-time winner of the award…

remember how I mentioned last week how Mark Ecko boughtBarry Bond’s 756th homer ball, and hat he put up a website for people to vote on how he should dispose of the ball?  Th choices were:

    A. Bestow it intact to Cooperstown.

    B. Permanently brand the ball with an asterisk before sending it to Cooperstown

    c. Launch it into space forever.

Over TEN million people voted (myself included) and the highest choice (47%) was to brand the ball and send it to Cooperstown–which is exactly what Mark Ecko will do.  And the kicker is?  Cooperstown will ACCEPT it in this condition!! From Dale Petroskey, Hall of Fame President:  ”…We’re grateful to Marc for donating this baseball, which represents one of the game’s most historic records. Baseball belongs to the fans — it always has and always will. The asterisk represents the voice of the fans at this moment in time. The level of interest reflects the strong bond between baseball and American culture. Our responsibility as a history museum is to present every story in proper context, and this ball allows us to do that.”

And Bonds response? ”…(options)don’t weigh anything. In baseball that number [756] stands.” “He’s stupid. He’s an idiot,” ”He spent $750,000 on the ball and that’s what he’s doing with it? What he’s doing is stupid.”  Now THERE is a classy guy….

Tonight: Jon Lester takes the mound to go for his 5th win of the season in the final game (of the series and season) against Oakland for the 2007 campaign. Joe Blanton opposes him for the A’s. 1st pitch: A weird 5:00pm-because of some union rule and it being a leaving day for Oakland…

One Response to “Red Sox 7, Oakland 3:

Now it’s 2 Christine! What a rollercoaster game that was. I have no clue what to do with myself now that it’s 8:30 and the game is already over!

How about the night Manny, Pedroia, and Lowell had? Makes me feel really good about the post season.

      Hope you are well.

      Ted
