    Red Sox 7, Oreos 4:
    Happy Birthday Tim Wakefield!

Posted by Christine E. at 11:40 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

How many pitchers can say they are undefeated on their birthday? Tim Wakefield can, as he celebrated a bunch of milestones yesterday: his 41st year, his 4th win on his birthday (his 3rd in as many years, His 13th win of the season (tied for the the most wins in the AL) and his 150th win as a member of the Boston Red Sox pitching 7 innings, Wake allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1… Cy Young and Mercenary Roger are the only other 2 Red Sox to have 150+ games–they are tied for 192…

A unique back to back homer combo–to say the least: You can believe, big Papi and Manny, Lowell and Youkilis–But Mirabelli and Hinske? Probably won’t ever happen again, but yesterday Doug Mirabelli and Eric Hinske jacked back to backs solo shots in the 4th. Its the 6th time this year the Sox have went back to back…Mirabelli has a 3 for 3 day (!) which more than made up for the bone headed “did I tag? I’m not sure I tagged, I should go back and tag” move he made in the 6th inning…From Doug: I felt we had to come through in that situation…You felt you’ve . . . really let the team down, and to come back and actually put them ahead feels good. It’s more relief than anything.”

Crazy Eights: Mercenary Roger gave up 8 (yes, EIGHT) runs in the 2nd inning yesterday against the White Sox–and then Jon Garland gave the 8 right back–in the bottom of the inning, but then the Pale Hose came back to win the game 13-9…

And, now from our neat-o stats department:

With their loss yesterday, the Skanks are currently back eight games in the AL East, and the magic number for the Sox to clinch the division is 47. HA HA…

Tim Wakefield in one of only 6 pitchers in the last 27 years to get a decision in each of his 22 starts this year. In recent times, Roy Oswalt was the last to do it for the Astros in 2005. The last member of the Red Sox to do it? Boo Ferris with 24 starts (18-6) in 1945…

Speaking of Wake, he is currently on pace to beat his wins record with the Sox, which was 17 in 1998…he was a young-un of 32 then…

In their last 13 games, the Sox have scored 7 or more runs in 7 of them…Should have been 10 or 11….

The Sox are the best in all major league baseball in day games, with a 23-9 average.

Tonight: The 1st of the NightNIGHT games to be played–5 of the next 6 begin at 10:05…UGH….Jon Lester gets the start this evening to kick off the 3-game series against Seattle. Horacio Ramirez takes the mound for the Mariners…

I laughed until I cried! Stupid Yankees giving a 45 year old man a $17 million dollar contract.

Great to see Wake win on his birthday: Wake is on top of the leader board in wins. How random is that?

Looking forward to the games in Seattle: very pretty park, but no to the late nights. At least the Seattle series is on the weekend: it’s those Angel games next week I’m worried about!

      Have a great weekend,

      Ted
