Red Sox 7, Tampa Bay 5:
    On the Right Track…

Posted by Christine E. at 11:35 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

    Hopefully…

It was a vintage Tim Wakefield game: He can be pitching brilliantly, and you wander away from the TV for 19 seconds and you come back and the bases are loaded and the bullpen is coming in…Unfortunately, Javier Lopez decided to pull a Mike Timlin, allowing 4 runs to score, so the cushy 7-1 lead quickly became 7-5–and I got nervous…

Fortunately, Manny Delcarmen has be spectacular of late, and managed to get the out necessary in the 7th, as well as 2 in the 8th. to end the threat and help preserve the win…Says Tito: “(MDC) worked real hard..the player development people really had a good plan and made him use all his pitches and throw multiple innings so when he got here, we wouldn’t be getting pigeon-holed. And he is showing a lot of poise. The ball is coming out of his hands with a lot of movement.” Manny Delcarmen has not allowed a run to score in 6 of his last 7 outings with the Sox. If he can keep this up, it looks like the Pawtucket/Red Sox shuttle might me stopping for MDC…

Because the pitcher who allows inherited runners to score does not get “credit” for those-rather them being reflected on the pitcher who put them on base in the 1st place, Tim Wakefield’s line at the end of the day was: 6 1/3 innings, throwing only 90 pitches, and giving up 4 runs on 7 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 2..His record now stands just north of .500 at 9-8…

If he can hold onto the lead, it looks like Hideki Okajima will beat Jeremy Bonderman for the 32nd spot on the AL All-Star roster–you can vote HERE…Balloting ends at 6:00pm today.

Neat Stats: There are 79 games left in the season, and only 21 of them are with teams with winning records (doesn’t mean that much in baseball, yeah, I know…)

BUT, because of the weirdness of this years schedule, 29 of the 79 games are with the Oreos and and Tampa Bay…

and the ONLY team in the AL East with a winning record? Yep, the Boston Red Sox, who enjoy a 11.5 game lead over 2nd place Toronto and 12 games over the THIRD PLACE Skankees…hahahahahahahahahaha…..

Here is a neat thing: The Sox have played 47 games where they were winning or tied in the 6th inning–and they won 45 of them….

And another one: The Sox have played 38 games where they have scored 5 runs or more–and they have won 35 of them…

One more: With Papelbon’s 20th save yesterday, he joins a pretty elite group of pitchers in Red Sox history who have notched 2 in a row seasons with 20 saves–He shares the honor with Derek Lowe (1999-2000) and Dick Radatz (1962-1963)

Tonight: Josh Beckett Beckett will go for win #12 (again) tonight, as he pitches his final game of this 1/2 of the 2007 campaign. Currently he is on pace for 22 wins for the season, which is decidedly better than his 16 win season of last year….1st pitch of the last game at the Fens for the 1st 1/2 is 7:05pm: J.P. Howell takes the mound for the Satan fish…

Hi Christine: hope all is well. MDC is really starting to impress, and he looks like a different guy as far as confidence on the mound goes. Great job by him and Papelbon yesterday.

You and I have talked about this before, but I bet if you tracked Rolaid sales on the day Wake pitches, they would spike up! I love the guy, but he takes years off my life when he pitches!

      Be good,

      Ted

I’m with you regarding Wake…One of my favorite pitchers–and a GREAT citizen of the Nation–but his starts can always turn on a dime in a second….or he could throw a 2-hitter…

This is the way of the knuckler, I suppose.

Hopefully MDC is righted his ship–cause I would much rather the Sox go after a bat at the trade-deadline–I think we need hitting more than pitching right now…

      Hope you are well!

      Go Sox!
