A pitching masterpiece from Julian Tavarez, 5 homers, leading to 11 runs, the Skanks losing, and winning the series against Atlanta? Definitely say these are many of my favorite things!
How cool was it that JD Drew hit a solo shot and Coco Crisp (The world is not ending, Ted, I checked) with his his 3-run shot to give Batsh*t Julian a 5-run lead before he even threw a pitch? Most pitchers could not relax and not worry too much about keeping the score low, especially since they managed to tack on another 2 in the 2nd inning.
But, as we all know, Julian is not your average, everyday kind of pitcher. In a line similar to Josh Beckett’s the night before, Julian went 7 strong, throwing 97 pitches, and allowing only 3 hits, 0 runs, while walking 1 and striking out 4. And a cool thing is that the 1st 2 hits were immediately negated by double plays so he faced the minimum 18 batters in the 1st 6 innings….he was even flirting with a no-hitter for a while…its was an amazing pitching performance–and if you had told me last year that Julian Tavarez would be a very good #5, I would have had you locked up…Truly…
A shot and a rest: Despite the fact that Curt Schilling’s MRI showed no structural damage, the Sox have decided to put him on the DL, retroactive to the 19th, with a sore shoulder. They also have him a cortisone shot to calm the area down. What concerns me more than anything is Curt’s admittance that something is not right: “I have not felt right this year…Pain is a relative term. There’s been a lot of this year trying to discern what’s because I’m 40 or what’s because I don’t feel good.”
Josh Beckett will take his start on Sunday against the Padres, which, because of today’s off day will have him pitch on his regular amount of rest. If he is ready, Curt will be eligible to be activated on July 4.
One possible good thing about Curt going on the DL, it may mean the return of John Lester for the Tuesday start, currently marked TBA…How excellent would THAT be!
DL Update: Brendan Donnelly has begun throwing again, doing some flat ground work as he progresses back from his right forearm strain. His next step will be more long toss to build his arm strength back up. He is eligible to be reactivate next Tuesday, but chances are it won’t be until the weekend at the earliest….
Speaking of injury: JD Drew was pulled for “precautionary” reasons in the 2nd inning, with tightness in his right quadriceps. He is listed as day to day…
And don’t think I did not notice that nifty 0-5 that Julio Lugo had…..I noticed….
Coming up: Another off day tonight..and then the Sox head to San Diego to play the Padres for a NightNIGHT game. Daisuke gets his 2nd start on the left coast, opposing Greg Maddux (who was part of the greatest..commercial…EVER…) Game Time is 10:05pm. I would have to say that the only thing that is good about night games is that I often have stuff to do in the early evening, so I miss a lot of a game. When they start late, my evening is winding down, and I can watch before I go to sleep…But that would be the only thing that is good about them…
