    Red Sox 4, Atlanta 9:
    Major Curt Schilling weirdness…

Posted by Christine E. at 9:54 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

14 years ago, on July 1, 1993, another major Curt Schilling weirdness occurred–actually, it was the same type of weirdness–no strikeouts. And 348 starts later, the same thing happens. OK, its strange enough he has no strikeouts–but when a pitcher who is 4th among pitchers still on the mound in strikeouts–its…major weirdness…

Another strange thing: two starts ago, he was completely dominant with the no-hitter into the 9th inning–last night? he could not get his fast ball past 90 more than–ONCE… For a pitcher that can hit 97 mph on the radar gun–this is very strange….

And the scary thing is Curt doesn’t really seem to know why: “What I’m doing is not working. I’m not executing. It’s not just one thing. It’s a combination of a lot of different things. To pinpoint one thing probably would be wrong…”I’m not pitching well…with this team, you can go out and not throw well and still win games. (but) I didn’t give us a chance.”

And how bout this line? 4 1/3 inning, giving up 6 runs on 10 hits..UGH…

And to continue the weirdness: Coco Crisp has his 1st multi-homer games EVER, and #2 and 3 this year..so he essentially tripled his home run total in 1 game…and finished the night 4 for 4…

And WHAT is up with 60 cents (Willie Harris) starting in RF for the Braves and batting like .389–and had 2 hits last night????

Isn’t it time to BENCH Julio Lugo yet? While he did not get an error last night (shocker, I know…) , it was another 0-fer night…going 0-3—only 6 more points and its the Mendoza line for him…and his batting average for his last 13 games? .106….I understand the whole loyalty thing, Tito, but how much worse could Alex Cora be?? and he is a better SS, any day of the week…

And has anyone noticed the Sox are NOWHERE near the pristine 16-2 record they had last year in interleague play? Right now, it 8-5, which means the best its can be (with 5 games remaining) is 13-5, the worst? 8-10..I predict somewhere in the middle–let’s say: 11-7…

The Forgotten Sock: Now predicting a September comeback, Matt Clement will be returning from his exile in Fort Myers, FL to Fenway when the Sox finish their 9-game world tour next week, where he will continue his rehab in Boston. Says Tito: “I would say in September he’s probably going to be getting close…”I don’t even know if I mean the beginning of September.

Come the middle of September, if the time frame holds, he’ll probably be getting close to getting in a game. He seems to be flying through this program. … They have those charts, and he’s at the top of every one of them as far as what he’s doing. He’s done a great job. You can only go so fast.” Now they are saying sometime in September–which just reaffirms what I have been saying all along—it’s likely we will not see Matt Clement again in the a Red Sox uniform…

Tonight: Josh Beckett again goes for win #10–hopefully be will fare better than his last outing, and return to the dominance of his 1st 9 wins. Tim Hudson (yes, formerly of the A’s) takes the mound for Atlanta–1st pitch is 7:35pm. Should be a great game if you’re into pitching match ups…

Christine, I read a few minutes ago Schilling is heading back to Boston for an MRI, so he may be hurt. I’m almost hoping for that and it’s not that he’s just getting older.

Crisp hitting 2 home runs caused me to turn to CNN to make sure the world wasn’t ending: plus, did you catch JD and the boys DANCING in the dugout after his HR? Talk about Surreal.

Hope you are doing great: not too far from the big day now. :)

      Ted

I hope that we will see Clement back at Fenway in a Sox uniform (fingers crossed). And Ted is right – The countdown to your big day is on! Nervous?- lol
