One More Day Until the Rest of the Sox Report…

Posted by Christine E. at 3:06 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

That is, except for Manny, if Julian Tavarez is to be believed….Tavarez was talking to Dan Roche in a TV interview Sunday night and mentioned that Manny’s mom requires surgery of some kind, which will prevent Manny form not reporting until next Thursday, March 1–a full 9 days after the mandatory reporting day of March 20. When Tito was asked for his input on Tavarez’s remarks, he indicated he knew nothing about it, and that the last he heard, Manny would be reporting on time…

Now, my knee-jerk reaction? It’s Manny being Manny–and the BS is ALREADY starting AGAIN…I would be happy to give him the benefit of the doubt, if it wasn’t for the fact that it seems around every all-star break or beginning of the season, Manny’s mother or grandmother dies, gets sick, or requires surgery…I guess we will have to wait and see what happens…

Rookie Hazing: Just because someone will make $52 million over 6 years, does not mean they will not participate in the ancient rite of passage for any rookie–hazing. Yesterday, Daisuke could be seen lugging Jason Varitek’s equipment on the field–a move, Jason explained to him, was an American custom. (He made sure Daisuke knew it was a joke) And of course, Jason returned the favor by carrying Daisuke’s glove and cleats onto the field–and mentioned that Daisuke has fulfilled his go-fer obligations for the rest of Spring Training. I just cannot wait to see what type of dress they put him for the last away series at the end of the year.

Schilling never met a press conference he didn’t like: In his 1st meet and greet with the media for 2007, Curt talked about alot of different topics, from the noticeable difference there in his prep to pitch (“It takes a little more time to do things now than in the past. Warming up is one of them. It takes a little longer to get cranked up.”) to his opinion the adjustment of his Japanese teammate to the bigs ( I don’t think it’s going to be anywhere near the adjustment people off the field think it’s going to be..Matsuzaka is phenomenally talented and I think he’s an ace-in-the-making, stuff-wise…) to his thoughts on Randy Johnson returning to the Diamondbacks( “As far as RJ goes…all the things that happened. I think he’s ecstatic to be back where he is. Regardless of what you want to say…if you know anything about him, is he gave them everything he had every time he took the ball.”) There seems to be this perception that Randy is going to return to being the pitcher he was before he left for the Skankees. While there may be some improvement becasue he is returning to he National League, he is also 2 years older, and physically less than he was…I don’t see him being a phenom…at all…

Where pitchers will pitch, and catchers will catch: After a weekend of physicals and agility training, and a little bit of mound work, today is the 1st day that pitchers will officially begin their Spring Training routines…

And the 1st game will be on February 28th…Whooo Hooo!!

      Hasn’t it felt like forever???

I can’t wait to see them take the field again. Hopefully Manny can join the team soon.
