The presents keep coming and coming…

Posted by Christine E. at 11:26 am in Red Sox Comments (4)

Whooo Hoo, by the time Christmas gets here, we will be all spoiled…:-) Every day there seems to be a new deal for a new pitcher or such–after a season of disappointments, the off-season has been anything but…

In an interesting twist, apparently the “just a formality” physical underwent by J. D. Drew has uncovered some things that are of concern to the Sox…He is getting a 2nd opinion today. It may not completely negate the deal, but it may cause some mondo revisions, such as shortening the length of the deal (currently 5 years) or less guaranteed money and more incentives…The Sox Front Office may have a chance to fix this very expensive deal…Leaving the guaranteed $11 million a year for the next 3 the Dodgers were to pay him, may have been an unwise choice by Drew….

A pair of Angels? The Sox signed one and traded for another this weekend, as Theo continued to find just the right mix for the bullpen for the 06 campaign…He picked up veteran all star pitcher Brendan Donnelly and lefthander JC Romero. Romero, thought to be affected by the WBC class, has a less than stellar season in 2006–was 1-2 with a 6.70 ERA in 65 appearances for the Angels. He did hold left-handed batters to a .211 average, permitted just 13 of 44 inherited runners to score, and finished second on the staff in appearances, however.

Brendan Donnelly is a most excellent pick up with a record over the last 5 seasons of 23-8 with a 2.87 ERA with 295 strikeouts in 295 innings over 276 relief appearances. This .742 winning percentage is the BEST among all relievers with at least 20 decisions. he has the 3rd most relief wins from 04-06 with 20 in that 3 year time frame..

Getting Brendan is a good thing–my only concern is what we traded him for: Phil Seibel was was kicking ass in the farm system in 2006, pitching in 22 games (including 13 starts) and posting a 6-3 record and 1.24 ERA. At Pawtucket he was 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in 9 relief outings. in 2004 he was part of the the show, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless for the Sox…so exactly, WHY did we trade this guy??? ohhhh boy….

And through all of this goodness and light–we need a closer….so if you have not finished your Christmas lists to Santa, make sure you add it….cause we all know how well the whole “closer by committee” works out…Is there anyway we can condition Papelbon’s shoulder so he could be our closer again? THEN we would be a force to be reckoned with…

Can the season start tomorrow? Please?

If it started tomorrow we’d be closer-less, and we’d miss winter!

Yes, we need a closer..But the thought of STILL over 100 days without baseball is a very sobering thought…:-(

Just think like this: Every day that goes by is one day closer to baseball!
