How much more will Theo Spend?

With a little more than a week left in the Daisuke Matsuzaka sweepstakes, the odds of signing the right hander are quickly dropping…Asking an arm, a leg and Theo’s first three children, Satan (in his “human” disguise as Scott Boras) is throwing completely unreasonable demands at the Sox–and he won’t budge from them… a quick review: Satan thinks that since Matsuzaka is one of the best pitchers in the game, he should be paid accordingly (in the $12-15 million range for 6 years, but if he can get him out of the contract is 3 so he can sign him elsewehere for even more money. he’d take that too…). The Sox counter with the very valid point that comparing Japanese baseball to MLB is comparing apple and oranges and, and since he has never pitched in the major leagues, his contract should be tempered at the $8-10 million range.

Of course, the negotiations are not helped by the fact that teams are paying whacky prices this off-season: JD Drew: $70 million/5 years, Soriano, $136 million/8 years–and a potential deal on the table includes $102 million/6 years for freakin BARRY ZITO, who, coincidentally is another of Satan’s clients…
Boras could very well be telling Matsuzaka that he should hold out and if he is not signed. the money will only get better–but that also could come back and bite him on the ass–it’s impossible to predict the future–the market could undergo some sort of correction and he could get significantly less…The other side of the coin? This is more money that anyone in Japan could even fathom–will his countrymen and fellow teammates resent Matsuzaka for being greedy and depriving his home team of the $51.1 million windfall?

I just really hope the Sox don’t panic and just start throwing money at him–they have spent enough money this off-season on questionables–and I am sorry, but Grady Little’s seal of approval on Drew and Lugo does NOTHING to assuage my concerns…

And if we haven’t danced with the devil in the pale moonlight often enough–The Sox are in talks with Satan for Eric Gagne–who is looking for at least $5 million GUARANTEED–despite only throwing 15+ innings in the LAST TWO YEARS–what, is he smoking crack??? Word has it that the Sox are not even entertaining that–let’s hope that’s true…But the bottom line is the Sox need a closer–and there aren’t any out there…

Looks like Doug Mirabelli may be back, only because there is really no one else out there–and he can catch Tim Wakefield–that would certainly be better than signing someone else then sending people to get Mirabelli back, and having those people do wonderful things–for another team…

Last night I was talking to some people and I thought of this–Next years potential rotation: Schilling, Beckett, Papelbon, Lester, Wakefield, and Matsuzaka (If we sign him) How freakin amazing is that? and then the question becomes: Who goes into the bullpen? Wake is probably the best choice, although it would suck, ’cause he deserves better…

But one piece of advice Theo–DON’T TRADE ANYONE!! You can never have enough pitching!

Will he or won’t he? Keith Foulke has until midnight to decide if he wants to play for the Sox next year–If he accepts the arbitration, he will be considered a signed player–if he rejects, which is the general consensus, he will probably end up with a team closer to his home is Arizona.

The 2006 Hutch Award, named for Fred Hutchinson, was given to Mark Loretta, who overcame malignant melanoma. The award is presented annually to the player who exemplifies Hutch’s most memorable traits: a fighting spirit and competitive desire. Congrats Mark–wish you were still going to be with us in 2007!

    7.5 days…tick tock…

For the bullpen, we did sign that other Japanese pitcher. Then there’s the ALWAYS reliable Timlin and the young kids…but we could definitely use a lot more help in that area!
