Well, so much for the thought that perhaps there was a TINY bit of sanity left in the front office of the Boston Red Sox….Nope!
It’s confirmed: $ 70 Million/5 years for J.D. Drew to bat 5th and replace Trot in right AND Julio Lugo will play shortstop–with a $36 million/4 year contract…The most notable quote about the Loogie? “The onetime Tampa Bay Devil Ray whose glove is vastly inferior to that of departing shortstop Alex Gonzalez but who gives Francona a dynamic, speedy offensive player, projects to bat leadoff or second.” Great…he’ll give up 6 runs, while he hits in 4…I don’t even have the words to say how disappointed I am in this signing–perhaps if recent history will continue–he’ll play a year, and then for some reason, we’ll get rid of him–WHAT is the attraction to this guy?????
One good thing about JD Drew: we will now have a legitimate #5 hitter–that is, if he manages to stay well (remember the 7 trips to the DL in the last 8 years?) and Manny stays…
And it appears Manny will once again be batting 4th for the 2007 campaign—Theo has been talking with everyone at the Winter Meetings regarding Manny–and sticking point is always the ambiguous “fair value” But if he stays, the issue becomes–will he play? It has already been stated that he will not show up for Spring Training if he is not traded. And let us not forget his “sore” knee from the end of last season…and the whole “Manny being Manny” crap is getting very tiresome–VERY tiresome…
The deadline is FAST approaching: December 14: Will Red Sox Nation get Daisuke Matsuzaka for Christmas? Satan has said: “He is going to play for a major league team. That part of it is something he has been aware of for a long time. When that time will come, I can’t tell you. We are going to do our best to see how this works out.” Translation: Unless I can wring a HUGE deal out of the Sox, he is going back to Japan and I will get the Yankees to overspend for him next year…”
With one 21-day cycle of chemo left to go, Jon Lester has started throwing–isn’t that what pitchers do? Jon Lester will be reporting in February, if he has his way. He was told last week by his doctors that there are no cancer cells visible and he can begin turning his attention to the 2007 baseball campaign. He will still need scans every 6 months, to make sure the cancer has not returned, but at this point he ” feels good, with lots of energy.” More from Jon: “My expectation from the beginning was that I would be at spring training next season at some point… I’m looking to be there at the reporting date.”
Shocking News: (Yeah, right) David Ortiz has won the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter award…Again…for the 4th time….in a row…In the 2006 campaign, he hit 54 homers, with 137 RBI’s and a batting average of .287–Congrats Big Papi!!
