Red Sox 5, Angels 4 As the skid is stopped…for the moment…

Maybe Dan Shaughnessy should stop trying to start trouble: While Manny started last night’s game, he was pulled in the 4th inning because of soreness in right knee. He’ll undergo an MRI and other tests this morning, but it does not look good…Remember around the all-star break when a report came out that Manny may have a torn meniscus? Well, it maybe more than a report… and yes, for those of you following at home–its the same thing that felled Jason Varitek… oooohhhhh boy….

Because the damage the WBC did to our pitchers wasn’t enough of an example: Jonathan Papelbon has been asked to be a member of the team of major league players who will travel to Japan in November to play a series of exhibition games. Papelbon wants to go, but the Sox rather he didn’t. “It’s been a battle back and forth,” Papelbon said.” It’s a chance to make some good money for a week or so…I’m at the point now where I’ve got to take advantage of the situations in front of me.”

Big Papi and Manny went in 2004, and while but Manny came home 3 days into the tour, Papi became a sensation, hitting a home run in the Tokyo Dome that was estimated to have traveled 514 feet. Ortiz was invited again to this years festivities, but citing travel plans with his family, will not go…

Future Perfect: Papelbon said he has been told he will meet with management after the season to discuss his role: closer vs starter. “Personally, I think closing is a lot harder,” Papelbon said, citing the stress involved. “It’s one of the hardest jobs in baseball. I’ve done both, so I think I’m qualified to say that.” Francona said there is a discussion planned for the off season. “He’d do anything…it will be interesting to see how that goes…he’ll be good at whatever he does…I talked to Theo and said, What are we going to do with this kid next year? My opinion is me, you, and him should sit down.” Papelbon is being paid $335,400 this season…

Do you want the good news or the bad news? The good news is Jason Varitek is taking swing from both sides of the plate, and has started dong some catching drills….and is still in line with the estimated Sept 1 return date–the bad news? Wake was supposed to throw off the mound yesterday, but played catch instead, as he still has pain…probably no chance of him starting Sunday’s game vs Seattle…

MLB is billing tonight’s game as a marquee match up…uh…WHY? Jered Weaver is a phenom (at the moment) going for his 10th striaght win, and Josh “maybe-this-time-I-can-fool-everyone-by-just-throwing-my-fastball” Beckett…isn’t. At least it looks like Doug Mirabelli will be catching him tonight–’cause JV wasn’t cutting it…

Tonight: Josh Beckett vs. Jered Weaver 10:05pm
